I've noticed that as soon as it gets to a certain point at night it's like the sun is still out: i

Is there a way to disable this to make it look more realistic?

i notice this as well, the only way to actually make it darker easily is to reduce the gamma/brightness.. The nights are a bit too bright in general

 

try setting it to early in the morning like 6 am, thats when it gets DARK
