The title says it all. Its just something I have been wanting to know for a while. Since you devs want some sort of file i thought i should have a crack at adding small dents to the 89 Pessima maybe make some sort of beater skin.
Hey, there are several ways to do it. Either you can create a high poly mesh and bake the details to your low poly mesh or you can paint them in GIMP for example. So you can create a duplicate of the mesh of which you would like to have a normal map from, increase the number of detail by raising the poly count and create the desired detail. After that you can use cycles of blender and bake the normal maps onto a texture. Or you use the GIMP normal map plugin to create them: https://code.google.com/archive/p/gimp-normalmap/ The general workflow is that you create a grayscale image and the plugin will create noraml maps out of it. - create a grayscale reprensentation of your desired details (make sure that everything is on one single layer) - start the plugin Filers -> Map -> Normalmap You can also merge several normal maps. Create a new layer and follow the previous steps (Just in case hide the other layers and make sure that you doesn't have a transparent background). After baking it go to the layer mode and change it to either 'overlay' or 'hard light'. I hope this will work for you. Cheers
So if you wanted to say add a dent would you just invert the grey scale representation? and where do you find plugin Filers -> Map -> Normalmap?
I have been having issues wit the normalmap plugn crashing it has caused me to become incredibly frustrated. Never mind I reinstalled the plugins and now it works. edit: somehow this happened after editing the normals.
had the same problem once. you have to export it with BC5 / ATI2 , not DXT5. should solve the problem
