How can I use a part from one vehicle on another?

If I was trying to use a sunburst engine in a barstow, is there an easy way to do it without sorting through .dae files?

For example, would it be possible to make a .jbeam file to look elsewhere for the .dae file data under a "common" folder?

because if I change a sunburst engine's slot type to "barstow_engine", it cant spawn anything besides the slot option.

any help would be greatly appreciated
