Cost of doing laundry has gone up again... I moved in to this flat just over 2 years ago, the prices for doing laundry have gone up by over 50% during that time. I understand that inflation is a thing, I also understand that water and electricity bills may fluctuate. However, they have not gone up by over 50% in price in just over 2 years, that is pure BS. Its now £3 for a wash and £1.50 to dry, and there is nowhere to air dry cloths without making yourself ill from dampness. When I first got here it was somewhere around £1.80 to do a wash and to dry was around £1.10 . Its obviously price gouging because they know we can't go anywhere else, there are no laundrettes round here. All apartment complexes have their own on site laundry machines, almost all of the on-site laundrettes are operated by the same company. All of them however are behind locked doors, meaning you can't go to another sites laundry. Their pricing is not universal either, they charge different prices in different buildings. I know that some of my friends in a different complex owned by the same company as mine using the same laundry company pays over 50p less to do a wash.
If I had positioned it a little better I could have saved it, but it was going right for the guard rail. I decided it'd be more effective to pirouette and pray. And I flooded a fuel injected engine... Again.
I would guess brass was cheaper or more practical than other options, but wasn't in fashion at the time it was made (1950's by the looks of it?).
Around that era I'd say, the original finish was polished brass. I still need to give it a good buff with proper metal polish, it had several layers of mint, and white paint.
I'd bet the mint paint was from the factory. It would support the idea of them being made in the '50s at least. I've seen the same trend a lot on things from that era. Pastel colours fell out of favour in the late '60s and early '70s so anything that didn't get thrown out was painted white or reupholstered in orange (like the chair I'm in right now). If they were indeed brass (you probably know better than I; I'm just speculating) they could be a little older. Brass wasn't super common in the '50s from my experience, but anything's possible.
The mint was on top of a layer of white paint, plus it all comes off to easily to be factory paint imo. A bit of hot water makes it lift off like it was nothing with a little scraping.
Agh, I got caught out editing my post again You're probably right then. Interesting that the mint was on top of more white. Not sure why I'm getting so involved in the entirely speculative history of two old hooks/handles/whatevers, but it's par for the course for me.
Guess some people just have tacky taste in colours. Maybe it's just because it's fun to speculate! They're household door handles, me thinks they'll look nice on the door to my Man Cave.

They were originally used to carry luggage from wealthy people's estates to the train station. Americans named them after the station, Europeans after the estate.
Not sure if its like that in all of Europe, but in the UK I'm pretty sure it just refers to their use on large estates for transporting items, at least as far as I know.
I read that the name came from the car being used to transport people and goods from train stations to estates.
