Two Aspirin, a punching bag and a mountain out of ice cream will do until then.

High might still be ambitious. Solid playable framerates in modern titles though, no problem.

don't forget, i'm still running a 1280x1024 monitor, so i won't exactly be running at 1080p, which unless i'm missing something here should give me a bit of extra leeway settings wise in most games

A fair bit yeah. You're drawing 63% as many pixels.

New PC is here, had a pain of putting my drives and stuff in it but holy shit it runs so much cooler and faster.

In the old PC with the mini-ish case my HDDs were constantly at an unhealthy 51C or so, now I haven't seen any go over 36C.

An area of GTA 5 that, on the 3570, used to bog down to 27-30fps because of my mods and traffic density, now breezes by at 55-65 on the 6700k. That's a HUGE increase and it's amazing. Not too concerned about the 55fps because my monitor prevents tearing on that front. No GPU change, still on the 980Ti so it must've been hitting the limit or a bottleneck on the 3570.

    TL;DR: It's amazing, why didn't I get Skylake sooner?

we can agree the software side of things are holding gaming back right? not the hardware.

    Of course it is.
Rule #0 of software development: All software is shit. No exceptions.

its a joke. the ps4 runs off a semi custom amd chip that looks like a 7870 or a 7850 or somewhere in that bracket. a 970 or a 290x are vastly superior and we end up with SLIGHTLY better graphics and framerate. pc master race? i wish. so much overhead from these APIs and the consoles get near perfect utilization. yeah witcher 3 looks great on my system turned up but i take that 7870 and throw it in my pc and ill get crap.

An Xbox One GPU is specs wise comparable to a 5770. Its pretty bad. Might be based of a 7870 type architecture but in the end with all the thermal and space limits it does't leave much.

    Consoles holding back PC, sure.

Slightly better though, entirely false. Consoles run most games in 720p 30fps. A mid to high end PC can run games with much better graphics in 1080p 60fps. That's twice the fps and more than twice as many pixels. Try running Witcher 3 on a 7870 in 720p low-mid settings (console like graphics), you'll easily get 60 fps. PS4 GPU is not a modified 7870, it's a modified APU, about as powerful as a GTX750 or AMD 7770/R7 260 accounting for lower API overhead.

so that's a really bleak picture to me than. i dont have such an eye for detail so that's subjective. gta5 looks marginally better on my pc with everything dimed than it does on ps4. you can nitpick sure but most of they eye candy dosent do a blind bit of difference. its not enough.
EDIT: but hey what can we expect. they make games for consoles and we get the "polished" carcasses.

I was more interested in how crap open gl did on the AMD cards than dx11/12 rivalry

I am sawing off the back of the PCIe 8x slot of my un-retired miracle machine. With a hand saw. It sounds terrible. I hope I don't break it in a way that forces me to run the 8800GT on 4 lanes...

I have a Pentium D 380 as a paperweight on my desk, you can do better than that. Don't buy a new motherboard for such an awful processor.
