Best selling cars in West Germany in 1974. https://avengers-in-time.blogspot.com/2017/04/1974-best-selling-cars-west-germany.html
I actually think its wierd that it is so high in the list. The Passat is kinda high too but i guess its because it was the Company car back then.
I also managed to find such lists for the UK in 1965, 1974 and 1975: https://avengers-in-time.blogspot.com/2017/06/1965-best-selling-cars-united-kingdom.html https://avengers-in-time.blogspot.com/2018/06/1974-best-selling-cars-uk.html https://avengers-in-time.blogspot.com/2018/11/1975-best-selling-cars-uk.html --- Post updated --- What I like about the 70s is how daring things were back then. Long-haired men, afros, colorful suits, cars and home furnishings, designs like the boattail Buick Riviera, cocaine paraphernalia ads in magazines, the #2 hit in the UK declaring the Queen's rule "a fascist regime", pop stars throwing TVs out of windows...
The 80s were similarly cool the cars the Music everything. The early 90s were car wise still cool but then declined towards 2000 then bounced back a bit and now they are really mixed some are the best of theyr model line and some are worse. For example the Golf 7 was the best Golf ever but the Golf 8 has gotten alot worse now.
The 80s were a time when a bit of a "class disparity" was going into cars - the rich could have their turbocharged beasts with ground effects, but if you weren't one of them, you better thought about aerodynamics, fuel mileage and the space utilization of minivans and hatchbacks
Depends here we had cheaper fast cars too stuff like the Golf GTI MK1 and 2 or the Escort 1600 Turbo and so on the classic working class heros. The Sierra Cosworth was kinda one too that was still somewhat affordable
"Here's Why The Lexus SC 430 Is The Best Worst Car Ever Made" I mean, it has lots of Quirks And Features™ - alloy wheels with hubcaps, GPS screen and radio both hidden under wood panels, the world's worst rear seat (I'll give Clarkson that one), it's the last car to come standard with a cassette player, not to mention it's a reliable (!) V8 (!!) convertible (!!!) for under $10,000 (!!!!).
Because it's a personal luxury car, not a sports car, and he probably can't comprehend how there can be a whole category of cars made for smooth cruising. Same reason he had the Mark IV and a Buick LeSabre in that worst car film.
This is informative, but Clarkson likes being entertaining and he has his own opinion on cars. I think his critique of the Lexus SC 430, Mark IV, and Buick LeSabre was his opinion and was for entertainment purposes only. I don't know much about the car, but you could be right about the engine thing.
I still get mad about that—he says "now let's look at some American cars" and compares some 1970s land barges to a goddamn M5. Of course they're not going to stack up, they weren't designed for performance in any way. And why just those two cars, and not any other American car? Of course I'm aware this is typical Clarkson humor, and the entire special is in the same vein. Just bugs me a bit because there's so many godawful American cars that are great candidates for "worst car in the history of the world."
Well, the M5 is among Europe's best, so why take a bad car to compete against it? Smart Roadster vs Iron Duke Camaro, perhaps?
