On the topic with VAG parts above:

Going for OEM ones are the killer, but there are plenty of third-party parts that you can get here for much less. I've had parts fail in my Jetta, but I have not paid a fortune in repairs. Tbh, I've replaced the ignition switch, purge valve, a few caps and some light bulbs but only totals about to $100 USD or so the whole time I owned it. Hell, I spent less than my dad on repairing his Expedition during the time period.

I have VCDS and the only electrical problem it reports is a open circuit for the passenger side mirror heater. Mechanically, a seal for my washer fluid needs replacing but already got the part for that ($3) and there might be a oil leak from the vacuum pump, but instead of paying $350 or so for a new one I can just install a delete kit for $150.

Pick-n-pull yards are around me on top of that so getting a part there is cheaper than from VAG.

Is this graph representing manufacturer's lineup globally?

Yes, though I think it's not fully up-to-date.

For example, it omits the VW Tharu and Teramont X.

Totally agree with you also having VCDS is super useful if you want to unlock features of your car

It's the perfect time to borrow a rental car for an unauthorized overnight joyride. Tons of them sitting in insecure lots.

I’m sitting in bed thinking of how I want to plan out my Ranger. Mostly the biggest change I want is an engine swap. Now I have 2 choices. I could either do a 5.0L V8 out of a Mustang or a 2.3 I4 Turbo Diesel out of an 84-86 Ranger. Both have it’s benefits but I came to the public to see what’s best.

When there's talk about 90s cars, people always talk about stuff like turbo Supras or NSXes, and not about ones like my dad's base Almera, or his brother's 1.2 Clio...

The best cars of the past are the boring ones.

    Change my mind.

You can get interesting discussions about them, not just "here's an amazing car, look with awe".

a good car is one that tells a good story

i've had better conversations with owners of less common cars e.g. nsu prinz, audi 80 than of sporty cars.
strange cars tell good stories, fancy cars don't

Someone needs to sit down and have a talk with BMW's head designer. This whole huge grille thing is ruining the cars.

The best cars of the past are the ones you can soup-up and enjoy driving. Which means the vast majority of them. Even a 3-cylinder Metro can be fun to drive in the right hands - because it doesn't deliberately try not to be.

SITREP: My Escort is RIP, left rear shock tower shattered, 100% unfixable without welding. Craigslist right now is a bunch of garbage parts cars and blown-engine Subarus. I can't believe I'm actually considering making payments on a car. One dealer near me has like 237 used cars and exactly six of them are manuals; are people really that freakin' lazy anymore?
