I have a problem with my gateway laptop. I haven't used this in a few weeks, and I turned it on to find this. Some places online have threads with similar issues, such as a red screen when "starting windows" appears. The colors are distorted and green appears in places that are supposed to be black. There's also an effect that looks like tv static on a lot of places of the screen. Should I replace the LCD?

Better off replacing the whole laptop. Gateway never was known for quality. Save that one for parts though... that's what I'd do. I personally like to keep old/broken computers around to salvage parts from should the need arise.

You have an external monitor you could test it with?
If it does it on both -> graphics card dying
Bad on laptop but not monitor -> bad connection to / faulty display

You could also try the classic "squeeze the screen and see if it goes away." Usually, if it clears up when you do this the screen itself is dying.

You've got a good point. The patterns I'm seeing in it look more like a failing GPU than a screen.

If it's the GPU that's failing, you can't do much (if anything) about it.

That depends. If its an MXM module, you can replace the video card in the laptop (this is often the case for gaming laptops). If it is Intel HD, you can replace the CPU if it is socketed (usually thicker laptops are socket). If the GPU is built into the motherboard... well not much you can do about that except to replace the motherboard. On a laptop, doing that is not worth the trouble IMO.

The fact the machine is running Windows 7 makes it hard to guess if it is Intel HD, or some other integrated GPU, as it could be either.

    That would be motherboard graphics.

It is an lcd panel issue anyway. The external monitor displays just fine

Oh, well there you go! I would assume finding a display for that isn't too hard.

Ebay's got some used parts but I'm not sure it's worth buying a new display for something I hardly use anymore. I just spent $600 on a brand new computer last week and I am thinking of just keeping this Gateway around in case I need it for parts.

So I fixed this thing, turns out all it needed was a new display cable.
