This was a tough one! But this is my final answer. For those of you that doesn´t like a piece of nostalgic reading about these cars, i would suggest just looking at the pictures. And for those of you that actually enjoys some retrospective, I hope you enjoy my little trip down memory lane! NOTE: The cars is not in any better to worse order. Just top 5 The first in the list is a post 1968 Volvo Amazon Wagon. The 1968-1969 models had a two piece steering column which split in half in the event of a crash to minimize the death rate. Already back then, Volvos first priority was saftey. During development of the Amazon, Volvo also developed and introduced the seatbelts, which became a world sensation. Jan Wilsgaard, who designed this, was also involved in the making of all the later Volvo models until the 1991 Volvo 850! The Amazon was called the Volvo P220 outside scandinavia because of copyright issues. A pre 1971 Volvo 145. 1971 was the last year of the long gear stick and the non-recessed door handles. The 1971 models had a seatbelt warning light to further improve car saftey. Ahh! A 1964 SAAB 95! 1964 was first year with round gauges and the last year with the old front. In 1965 the front was redesigned to make room for the radiator. When the SAAB 95 first was introduced in 1959 it became a sensation. It was the first "real" station wagon based on a already existing sedan in Sweden ever since Volvo had not yet launched their Amazon Wagon. The SAAB was only 412 cm (162 inch) long but still a seven seater! Impressive! Some argued that the little SAAB wasn´t a "real" station wagon and that it had to be some sort of limit on how small a wagon could be. However, the main goal was to have well planned and large spaces. And in that respect, the car met the requirements. A funny thing about these old SAABs is that you had to have the reverse gear engaged to remove the key from the ignition. What a underestimated beauty! A 1961 Borgward Isabella Combi. The Isabella saw its first light in 1954, however its name was supposed to be Borgward Hansa 1500 just like its predecessor, but due to the workers referring to it as "Isabella" during development they changed the name. This led to the fact that the first built cars had no Isabella badge on the trunk. The problem with these was the poor rust protection and therefore most of the cars were scrapped. In Sweden, the Isabella is often referred to as "Hon dansade en sommar" which means "She danced a summer" due to the cars short life. The name was originally a name of a movie that aired a couple of years earlier. Last but not least, another Volvo... A Volvo PV 544! Produced between 1958-1965. The PV 544 was the predecessor of the PV 444 and when the PV 444 was about to be developed in 1944, Volvo knew that a small car with low fuel consumption would be attractive after the war and the PV 444 was born. After 14 years of good sales everybody thought that the end of the PV was near. But Volvo then introduced the PV 544. With a non split front window, a bigger rear window and a new dashboard the 544 could be ordered with several new engines and transmissions. Electric windshield washer, seatbelts in the front and trip meter was available extras. The 554 costed about 10% of the price required to develop a completely new model. The 544 was cheap to develop, but under the body the car was more modern than many of the competitors. I thought I would write something at the end aswell, so I thought I would tell you that I own one of these cars. I´m not going to say which, but some of you might already know or will know soon after a little bit of research. I´m not a native english speaker and if I have written an error, I appreciate your help! Hope you enjoyed this as much as i did! /CRE84FUN
