It's really all about learning all the sweet mesh modification tricks, after that you're home free.

This might already be answered somewhere, and if it is, then i'm sorry.(i have no idea what i'm talking about, so please excuse the "noobism") What do you guys actually use to "put the beams in the car"? Does blender do that, or is it some other program. I'm trying to get into modeling myself, so once again, please excuse the "noobism".:)

Currently it's all done in a text editor, using the game itself as a viewer.

Gabester , i realize how cars get deleted or cars that are like real are not to much in Rigs of rods ? So if i was to make a car based off a charger , and it looks like one, it will be deleted from here ?

No, we're not responsible for 3rd party content.

They only get deleted in Rigs of Rods when they're stolen content, models from Forza for example :)

They're not deleted because they're "real" cars, like it's been said. Mods can be whatever you want to make. The only difference between the mods and the official cars is that the official ones are paid for and without a license from the manufacturer, you can't make a real car and then make money of it. That's why Gabe is making cars that he's designing himself, also because he loves doing it though.

GTA does the same as you might've noticed. Rockstar don't bother (or whatever their reasoning is) to get a license so they make their own cars.

In addition to paying for licensing, in all likelihood no car company would let their vehicles be destroyed to the extent that they can be in BeamNG. They've never done so in the past for any other game.

Alternatively, select the whole mesh, or a specific area, in edit mode and hit Ctrl+N :)

Agreed, the new UI layout is far easier to manage and far more convenient. The new aesthetic and darker tone looks a lot more modern and professional too.

Books can't teach modeling 3d. you either need to watch tutorials on youtube or buy some tutorial dvds.
    http://www.cgmasters.net/training-dvds/car-modeling-and-texturing/
I watched this, it creates a camaro in blender3d at the same time teaches blender and car modeling basics.

Sh3lbye, you seem to be doing somewhat alright with the shape. It's easily recognisable. It's a bit off, but for a first car that's not too big of a deal imho. I think if you use more reference, you'll see on your own what you're doing wrong. The poly-layout seems alright as far as I can see on the roof.

To be honest, I think most modelers just need to *do* it more to become good at it. You need to watch/read one or two tutorials on how a program works, so you know how to get your blueprints set up and how to make a simple shaped object. After that, you really just need practise. With most tutorials on youtube, they only teach you *exactly* how to make *one* certain car. Then when you're done you forgot everything what you did in the beginning. I even think written tutorials with pictures are more useful than videos, because on videos it's a bit of a hassle to keep going back and forth when you miss somethign, so sometimes you just can't be bothered. In a written one with pictures, you can just focus on a single sentence, and wonder what the hell they're talking about as long as you'd like. Written ones usually help you understand better how to use the program, rather than how to make one specific car.

Also, something most tutorials don't tell you about when making cars: Your polygons(or their edges, rather) need to flow with the lines of the car. You don't want square polygons diagonally across the doors, unless there's an actual bodyline there, diagonally across a door on the real car(ie like on the newer Seats there's a crease/fold there, diagonally, in that case you *need* to put the (edges of the) polygons along the shape of the crease).

When I made like my 5th car model it still wasn't very accurate in design. Yeah, I had the flow of the polygons pretty alright, and all the details were there, but the shape of the car itself was *way* off. It requires so much practise to get the shape of a car right.

When I'm modeling a car, I usually have about 5-7 pictures of the same area of a car open, all taken from different angles, and I keep alt-tabbing to see if I get the shape right, and I save every single picture I use(I usually end up with about 3-400 pictures per car!). I did that even when I was modeling my real life car that I walk past every single day. I'm pretty sure noone can accurately replicate a cars shape with just blueprints. When you look at pictures of the outside, you should also always look at the reflections of light in the paint. It can help you understand how a panel is angled because of how the light catches it.

Also, when you just start modeling, stay away from Sketchup, like, don't even try it out or anything, just avoid it. I'm not saying Sketchup is the anti-christ and sh*t, cause it's not. Sketchup is a VERY easy-to-get-used-to program and when you're into it, it's very hard to switch to another program. When you just start it's MUCH simpler than Blender, 3dsmax, Maya, or Zmodeler, or whatever, interface is much easier etc. The problem is, Sketchup was never meant for game models. When you just start modeling, you usually end up with WAY too many polygons because it's so simple to make extreme detailing in Sketchup. However, only like 2% of the people who use it actually realise it's a bad idea to have 100-sided circles for the keyhole in the doorhandle, or for the bolts in the suspension. And when you tell them to start using another program, they say "No that program is too hard, and this works fine, I don't see the problem with Sketchup"

I can guarantee it's MUCH easier to *master* 3dsmax, than it is to *master* Sketchup. Sketchup is only easier when you just start out.

Honestly, do not even look at Sketchup. I've seen people who have great creativity get sucked into that program as if it was a drug, because it's just so much easier when you have no idea what you're doing, but then they're addicted and will never start learning a new program.

Also, like Gabester said in another topic: Start with as few polygons as possible. That way it's much easier to get the general shape right, and then you can add more later to do detailing.
