I think "red" lights and brake lights looks bad in night because they are too orange (and dull) ones. And no even seem for LIGHT emission things at all. TOO dull, TOO false. I suggest place the clean red (with small glow) for "normal" backlights and add more fat glow for "brake lights" to simulate more brightness level. Here are video:
