I am creating sideways opening doors just like in the vanilla dryvan trailer. THe problem i have is closing the doors. The coupler nodes want to take the shortest path together as shown with red arrow rather than spinning around the hinge as shown with yellow arrow. I've looked at the vanilla jbeam and tried to copy everything but just cant figure out how the doors close by spinning around the hinge.

Hey! I think I can point you in the right direction.

From your screenshot, it looks like the coupler is attracting the door nodes directly toward each other instead of reliably rotating the door around its hinge.

BeamNG's regular couplers apply attraction between nodes. They don't actually define the rotational path of a hinged component.

I'd suggest looking into Torsion Hydros.

They're designed to change the angle between two sets of nodes, and BeamNG's documentation specifically mentions their use with openable panels.

    You could potentially use:

    1. The existing hinge nodes/beams to constrain the door's rotation.

    2. A torsion hydro to control the door's opening and closing angle.

    3. The existing coupler as a latch once the door reaches its closed position.
The torsionHydros JBeam section uses four node references to define the lever arms and hinge axis. You can adjust factor, inRate, outRate, and inputSource to control the movement. A negative factor reverses the direction.

    Official documentation:
    https://documentation.beamng.com/modding/vehicle/sections/torsionhydros/

    Regular hydros are another option:
    https://documentation.beamng.com/modding/vehicle/sections/hydros/

Before adding anything, I'd also check the hinge-node alignment and structural beams. A misconfigured hinge can allow the coupler to pull the door inward rather than guide it around the intended axis.

If you can share the relevant door JBeam sections—particularly nodes, beams, torsionHydros (if present), and the coupler/controller definitions; it should be possible to narrow down the problem without guessing at node IDs.

    Hope that helps!
