LORE:
In the 1940s, the United States military opened Small Island as a top-secret base. By the 1950s, it became a strategic Cold War outpost used to spy and gather information on the Soviet Union. As satellite technology advanced in the late 1970s, the military decommissioned the island's radar sites early and handed the land over to the public. On October 10, 1980, a non-profit organization officially opened a bird migration observatory on the grounds, established a vacation spot, and built the rural town. The local gas station was later updated in 2000. Currently, Small Island houses 1,200 permanent families and hosts up to 20,000 vacationers.
Environmental Note: Please be respectful and careful when driving by the bird migration office, as there are rare birds nesting nearby.
