Apparently, I'm not a great driver, since I've never had to use the fuel stations in beamNG. I've been wanting to have to worry about running out of fuel on my trucking journeys and off-road expeditions, and also give the servos a purpose, so I made this mod.
When looking, many people suggested using the tuning menu to decrease fuel in the tank, but then when you refill at a servo it goes straight to full, and you'll never enjoy the satisfaction of a temporarily full gauge. Others said make a thirstier vehicle config but I get off on realistic tunes.
I made and tested this on v0.34.1, but it should work on newer and older versions, although the HT-55 and WL-40 almost certainly won't work, for reasons I will explain below.
To install, drop the zip into your mods folder. There is a txt file in the zip with instructions, but I will outline them here:
Small Vehicles - BeamNG and Mods:
Use the number plate design dropdown in the parts menu. The mod will remove the fuel from the original tanks and replace it with the amount and type you chose. This works whether or not the main tank is removed, since the fuel is really stored in the number plate. Some vehicles, specifically mod vehicles, may end up with double or more of the requested fuel if its tanks don't fall under the standard naming scheme.
The tank sizes for small vehicles are: 1L, 5L, 10L, 20L.
Automation Vehicles:
New options have been added to the fuel tanks slot. The sizes are the same as above. Automation cars don't have a number plate design option and it seems they all use the same naming scheme for the fuel tank, hence the different method for Automation vehicles.
Trucks and Buses - BeamNG:
The mod lowers the stock tanks' capacity. The fuel tank dropdowns will show the stock tanks have been replaced with lower capacity options, the physical sizes remain the same. It was done this way because heavy vehicles use a different naming scheme, and it was easier to mod the 3 files themselves than to figure it out. Conversely, using a universal option for cars was easier than modding 200 separate car files. This is why the newer HT-55 and WL-40 are not included, I don't have the files or the need, but it is very obvious how to add them if you look at the mod files.
The tank sizes for heavy vehicles are:
T-series: 50L, 100L, 150L(x up to 2, sidestep tanks are unchanged)
Bus: 100L
MD-series: 40L (x up to 2)
