Beta Backyard Kart 0.17.6

A backyard-built kart

  1. A month's worth of stuffs

This was the most work I've put into a mod lol. It is much more stable now in all configurations, aside from the tires, that is. Full changelog below:

    • Frames
      • All frames have had their beam structure redone
        • This ranges from minor weight tweaks to full-on rebuilds to different sections
      • The front subframe can now be broken off
      • The Independent rear subframe is more durable
      • The entire frames can now be deformed
        • This doesn't look entirely good in some spots, but it makes crashing feel a lot better
    • Front Suspension
      • This is where I spent the most time the last couple of weeks
      • The front wheels are much less likely to wiggle at speeds under 100mph
      • Using extreme alignment no longer bends the front subframe
        • The beams in the front subframe now apply precompression to resist the caster and camber adjustments
      • Changed the front arm geometry
        • They are able to move more freely now without flapping
      • Introduced pre tuned Sport coilovers
        • These have a smaller travel range than the standard coilovers
        • They are overall stiffer than the standard coilovers without sacrificing drivability like the heavy coilovers
        • They are designed to be the "normal" street coilovers
      • Introduced Adjustable Race suspension
        • These have very little suspension travel
        • They are still fully adjustable, but have ranges that make more sense
      • Slightly changed hub shape
    • Rear Suspension
      • The raised axle is completely redone
        • It no longer vibrates on its own under normal racing stress
        • The vibrations that exist now are all due to the tires
      • The standard axle was changed a little bit
      • The independent rear suspension was completely changed
        • A new beam structure for the subframe
        • Arm positions were slightly changed
        • Rear Hubs were completely redone
          • They are now much more stable and have the groundwork for possible rear steering
      • Rear coilovers have been retuned
      • Introduced Sport and Race coilovers to match the front
    • Engines
      • The 250cc and 450cc engines have a new model
      • Introduced a 750cc engine
      • Added exhaust to all engines
      • Tuned thermals of all engines
        • I didn't have the attention span to seriously test all of them
    • Transmissions
      • Changed all transmissions to sequential
      • Added a crawler transfer case
    • Rims
      • Rims have been further refined and do not cause instability at speed
    • Tires
      • Tires are still a pain for me, but they are getting closer to something I can live with
    • Configs
      • All configs received a more fine tuning than before
        • I based the tuning on tips from communities that the configs are inspired from.
        • The welded front race configs are based on kart tuning
        • The standard configs are based on the IRL kart
        • The sport configs are based on road cars
        • The IRS race configs are based on race cars
        • The Short Course or SC configs are based on UTV and ATV tuning
      • Added two new configs
        • 750cc SC
          • SC stands for Short Course, referring to the offroad racing style
          • It uses stiffer suspension and 4-wheel drive
        • 1000cc SC
          • Pretty much just the 750cc config with a bigger engine slapped on.
    • Meshes
      • Added new meshes for the 250 and 450cc engines
      • Adjusted meshes I thought looked bad
    • Textures
      • Changed some textures from png to dds
    • Dummies
      • Adjusted node placements
      • Added triangles to the feet so they do not phase through the front panels
    • Aero
      • Tweaked node structure to better match the meshes
      • Added wings with a more realistic downforce
        • The current ones have 20x what they should
      • Added a much wider front wing
        • That comment from Muye on the tiny front wing stuck with me for some reason
      • Adjusted drag coefficients of all other faces

Known issues (generally won't affect the kart too much
    • The Dummy's right arm sometimes does a little wiggle
    • Some of the race configs will cause instability when crashing at ridiculously high speeds (100+ mph)
    • I forgot to update the chain mesh for the raised axle 250cc and 450cc engines
    • Tires are still unstable under very hard cornering (2G+) or at high speed (140 mph+)
      • Half of the reason for the unrealistic wings is that the extreme downforce helps keep the tires stable at higher speeds
