Actually you can add basic meshes (Cube, Cone, Torus, etc.) to the JBeam when in Edit Mode under the "Add" menu.

sorry its not supported right now, but you can import like a very basic jbeam file and then essentially create it from scratch that way :)

hmm looks like you are on an older version of the plugin and also try running Blender in admin mode
You might need to restart Blender after enabling the addon, as the old addon can conflict.
