Will the BeamNG developers move away from the .dae file format since it's starting to become outdated (the last update of OpenCollada was 6 years ago)? If so, which format will they use—FBX, OBJ, or something else?

I'm also very interested in this question. The Collada dae libraries have not been maintained for such a long time, so I think that this will probably result in a change for us sooner or later. The Blender Foundation justifies the classification of the Open Collada libraries as "legacy" with security and performance issues. I would be very happy if the BeamNG team could inform us about what we can expect. :)

her chatGPT respond not sure what to think about GLTF look to be the best since its open source

    • FBX (Filmbox)
      • Last Update: FBX is actively maintained by Autodesk. The most recent updates to the FBX SDK were in 2023.
      • Pros: Widely used in the industry, supports a wide range of features including animation, materials, and complex geometries. It's compatible with many game engines and 3D software like Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, and Autodesk Maya.
      • Cons: It’s a proprietary format, so it might not be as flexible as open-source options.
    • GLTF (GL Transmission Format)
      • Last Update: The GLTF format is maintained by the Khronos Group, with the latest stable release in April 2023.
      • Pros: Designed specifically for efficient transmission and loading of 3D models in web applications. It’s open-source, lightweight, and supports PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials, making it a good choice for modern game engines.
      • Cons: It may require more complex workflows for certain features, depending on the game engine.
    • OBJ (Wavefront Object)
      • Last Update: The OBJ format itself is quite old and has not seen significant updates in recent years, but it remains supported and stable.
      • Pros: Simple and widely supported format for 3D geometry, with compatibility across virtually all 3D software.
      • Cons: Limited to geometry and texture information—doesn’t support animation, lights, or materials as robustly as other formats.
    • USD (Universal Scene Description)
      • Last Update: Maintained by Pixar, USD is continuously updated, with active development and new releases in 2023.
      • Pros: Extremely powerful and flexible, capable of managing complex scenes with many assets. It's becoming a standard in VFX and animation industries and is increasingly being adopted in game development.
      • Cons: More complex than other formats and might require more effort to integrate into existing pipelines.
