I remember when I tried to download a cracked VST plugin. I think it was Nexus, I cant remember fully. Anyway, I ran the file, and it was your standard keygen right, but it happened to install a payload silently behind my back. A few minutes later, after I tried the VST in FL Studio, which the VST did not work, a window opened for a app called "Lively Screen Recorder". It was supposedly a screen recorder, but I never tried it to see. I closed it straight away.

Then, a notepad file popped up, which was a ransom note, demanding me to pay $980 within 48 hours or else my files will be deleted. Below is a photo of the text document that I used in my video, which explains the overlay text, kinemaster logo, and the fullscreen notification

Anyway, I got infected by the .lqqw ransomware, which locked all my files. I didnt have anything important, so I just reset my PC, and everything was good.

Until a few days later. I was on my PC, and I got an email, of a sign in on my google account. I checked it, and saw that someone from Russia signed into my google account and started uploading scam videos to my channel

I quickly reset my password, enabled 2FA, and kicked them out. Then I deleted the videos, and luckily my channel didnt get deleted.
I also realised that bundled with the ransomware was also a stealer, called "Vidar" stealer. It took my passwords from my browser, and I also believe cookies too. So currently, my email and OLD passwords are on HIBP, but not the new ones, so nothing can be done.

This was probably the scariest moment I have had online, so I am iffy on what I download now.

Rule of thumb, always use virus total to scan files before running them. Better to be safe than sorry.

What ended up happening to you?
