Are you asking what a flywheel is? A flywheel stores the energy created by the engine during the power stroke so that it can then be released during the other three strokes and keep the engine from stalling (basically, the heavier the flywheel, the slower an engine can run and the smoother it will run). That's its most basic function. It is also the part of the drivetrain that transfers power to the transmission through either a clutch or a torque converter that would be bolted to it.

A flywheel is what is attached to the crankshaft (and therefore the pistons) on the engine side and has the clutch attached to it on the gearbox side, attached to it is the ring gear needed to start the engine.

Basically, the flywheel governs how smoothly the engine will operate. Sport- or Race-spec flywheels will have more aggressive RPMs, therefore being not all that smooth compared to a standard civilian-grade flywheel.

It makes your gas more responsive and in general revs your car faster. It´s a nice little addition

that only happens when you switch from a heavier flywheel to a lighter one.
in general a flywheel does pretty much the opposite - it makes the engine run more smooth and vibration-free in exchange for more sluggish response.
