So this issue has been going on for a while now and I thought it would go away.

The game starts perfectly fine, running my usual FPS, but after I change my vehicles a few times and continue to play after a certain amount of time, the audio will starts to get this popping sound, and my FPS will slowly decrease, I'm not sure what causes this but eventually my game crashes and I get this error code, BeamNG.drive 0.11.0.5 0xCFFFFFFF STATUS_APPLICATION_HANG.

Huh, I have the same problem, I just thought it was my laptop being a laptop. It only happens when playing on west coast usa (or that's where I have noticed it). Sound quality goes absurdly low, starts popping and makes my ears bleed. Then fps goes down, pretty steadily, until it reaches 12fps. Pausing physics restores fps once again.
I have also noticed (could be unrelated), that sometimes after playing on west coast and switching to another map my fps starts slowly declining.

AFAIK, BeamNG has a memory leak from one of the latest updates, so that could be the cause... My fps drop down too after like an hour of playing on one map

Eh? Where's that 'news' coming from?

Sounds are tied to physics, and physics are tied to FPS. If you go below 20FPS, physics go in slow-motion, and so does sound, causing popping and all that stuff, as you are technically playing under the realtime limit.

In the sidemenu there's a 'Performance Graphs' button (if you have 'Advanced Functions' enabled in the options).
Launch it on that map, and press the 'Hide UI' button on top. Once done, take a screenshot.
Repeat when your FPS go low.

Of course, knowing hardware specs would give some hint.
Being a laptop, check also temperatures.

Interestingly, I couldn't get the audio popping this time. The whole thing below could be an entirely new issue.

Specs: i7 4710HQ running at 3GHz on all cores, 8gb of ram and a GTX 860m overclocked. Game installed on an m.2 ssd. This picture tells everything related to the temps: temps.png Basically, no thermal throttling, or any other type of throttling either for the whole test.

    Here is the first graph:

Do notice it has two of those "UI disabled" cycles.

Then I played around the map a little, maybe like 20 minutes of driving around. You can see this moment on the CPU utilization graph. I pressed Alt+Enter twice and got to this graph:

I know it's a bit short, but should give you some idea. However THIS IS NOT THE SAME BUG AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. Pressing J did not gain any fps, and the sound effects did not change at all. Interestingly tho, the cpu dropped to 1.8GHz (???), but I changed it back to 3Ghz immediately. This still didn't help, fps stayed at 13 no matter what. Resolution and other settings did nothing. Literally nothing I could do to get the fps back, but my system was running fine.

The attached video is further proof that this could be a new bug, notice that the sounds are normal (no popping) but fps is not.

Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 1400 Quad-Core Processor with 3.20 GHz and with 8 GB or RAM installed. I've gone back through the screenshot I took with Mods enabled It it was staying above 20 FPS (but at that time I was running on a smaller map). Now with mods disabled no popping, but really slight physics delay

    Here are my two screenshots.
