Why not make a trending threads section based on the replies a thread has gotten in the last 24 hours. I would help in finding new threads with a lot of replies, but I would prevent those ancient threads from appearing in the section. You could make one for the whole forum, too if you wanted it. Also, if an old thread suddenly got a lot of replies, people would be able to see something interesting could be happening on the thread.
