As I was going through some custom configs I've made and fine-tuning them, it hit me that there are now four different versions of the Ibishu 2.0L I4 in-game and, while they are all similar stock, they are all different in terms of how much power they can make and take when upgraded. The 200BX is the strongest with no "variable" engine parts other than the ECU; the stage 3 long block can withstand the stage 2 turbo, and this combination gives 538 HP, 420 lb-ft. No idea how much boost you can shove through it with a stage 3 and not have it blow up. The VM301 Pessima is a close second and gives 527 HP, 418 lb-ft with the same S3 engine + S2 turbo combination. Next is the VM501 Pessima, S3 engine + S2 turbo causes overtorque so my setup has to use an S3 variable turbo set at 15.5 PSI to get 496 HP, 339 lb-ft. Finally there is the Covet with what I would have originally assumed was a straight-across VM301 Pessima engine; again, S2 turbo is too much for S3 engine so I set a variable turbo at 14 PSI to get 493 HP, 344 lb-ft.

On the high end, the 200BX and older Pessima are very similar, however I remember finding out a few updates ago that the Pessima's 2.0L had wildly overbuilt stock internals and could eat a ton of nitrous right off the showroom floor, whereas the 200BX wasn't nearly so tough. On the low end, the Covet and VM501 Pessima have very similar peak numbers, but get them very differently: the Covet has a fairly "normal" (for this level of tuning) torque curve and a max rev limit of 8600 RPM, which it loves to wind all the way out to, whereas the VM501 is very peaky due to the stage 3 long block being the touring car setup, and can be allowed to rev higher than the Covet but there's no point as power falls off so quickly past 7800. The VM501 is, however, the most powerful of all of them stock.

So, taking into account the various differences between these engines, both stock and modified, was it intentional on the part of the devs to have Ibishu build 4 noticeably different 2.0L I4s, all with similar purposes and stock power output levels, all within about 10-15 years of each other?

seems odd, now that you say it, but its cool that we have engines that are similar, but just slightly different

I checked the max power of each 2.0 I4 (in game)
    • Covet
    UHD long block
    S3 turbo
    8600rpm limit, 851 hp, 810 Nm @42psi

    • 200BX
    UHD long block
    S3 turbo
    8500rpm limit, 815 hp, 788 Nm @40psi

    • VM301 Pessima
    UHD long block
    S3 turbo
    8500rpm limit 696 hp, 637 Nm @32psi

    • VM501 Pessima
    S3 long block
    S3 turbo
    9000rpm limit, 498 hp, 456 Nm @14.5psi

    UHD long block
    S3 turbo
    7300rpm limit, 495 hp, 600 Nm @32psi

Recent updates have improved the performance of the 200BX UHD long block by allowing it to be turned to a much higher RPM. 200bx, VM301, and Covet performance almost identically. 200bx, Covet, and VM301 engines are probably square or short stroke engines; the fact that only the pessima has slightly different specifications may have to do with it has an AWD version.
The only engine that differs is VM501, which can hardly rev high enough to produce any power. VM501 engine has a different engine head so it can rev to high rpm, but the power does not go to high rpm, so it may be a long stroke type. vm501 pessima is less of a sports car, so it would be torque at low rpm, with easy to drive.

Well I mean, that comparison mixes the order up a bit but now we have the VM301 being down over 100HP and 150NM on the 200BX, which itself is 35HP behind the Covet. I could understand the VM501 specifically having a different engine just due to it being newer than the other three, but the remaining inconsistencies still don't make much sense.

As for the VM501's high redline in S3 form, as far as I know a non-damaging lack of power at high RPM is usually a result of cylinder-head or valvetrain issues: too-restrictive ports, a lame camshaft, or outright valve float. A bad bore-stroke ratio wouldn't completely block off the high RPM range as seen on the VM501, unless it got to the point where the cylinder bore was so narrow (given the cylinder head design) that a hot camshaft would just lead to valves hitting cylinder walls, as seen on certain emissions-motivated versions of the Chevy small-block V8.

I would say that the engines in the Covet and old Pessima are supposed to be the same engine, because they used to be identical but the Covet remaster nerfed the engine and possibly the upcoming Pessima remaster will do the same in the Pessima. The new Pessima I would say has a modernized version of this engine, that's why it makes a bit more power. The 200BX engine is obviously a completely different engine meant more for sports cars than cheap daily drivers.
