Now, I don't know if "most" is the right word but I've noticed over time that a lot of vehicles you'd expect to have power steering, don't spawn with it. Especially modern vehicles. Now, I know an absence of power steering isn't unusual in certain sports and race cars, but is there a reason a French economy crossover made in 2020 doesn't come with power steering automatically? Why is that? Is it a preference thing for BeamNG or is it realistic? I haven't driven a car without power steering IRL since my steering pump broke on my ancient Honda Accord. It's just something that I've always questioned, because from what I've come to understand 99% of cars on the market today have power steering. Not in Beam tho apparently....
I TINK it for batter FORCE FEEDBACK on the stirring wheels control in the gam --- Post updated --- game
I mean, maybe? I'm using a wheel right now, all no power steering does is make it harder to turn while stopped. I don't feel a great enough difference in power steering vs no power steering in terms of force feedback. There are a few cars that feel floaty and minimal in the feedback department with power steering turned on, like the Cherrier Tograq EV for example. But for the most part I can't feel that big of a difference, really. It's a little harder to steer and there's probably a bit more force feedback but it's not a great enough difference I can feel. And also, if they do this intentionally for FFB reasons, that would implicate Beam assumes the majority of players will play using a compatible wheel with FFB. Which, just doesn't happen. I don't know. This kinda stuff has bugged me for a while but it's not that big of a deal to me as I prefer no power steering on Beam.
if i'm remembering correctly from a post i read a year ago that sat in the dusty corner of the attic within my head, the power steering is really only for wheel users, it doesn't do anything on standard desktop controllers. i don't remember the exact reason for the issue though, but i do remember that many people were disputing the devs over it and no resolution was agreed upon.
I'd imagine it'd probably be because the centering spring strength and FFB is all disabling power steering changes. On controller there's no mechanism in the joystick to make it spring back to center at different rates depending on the vehicle providing resistance. And you don't get force feedback on controller outside of vibration. So ig it would make sense for it not to matter for anyone but wheel users if this were the case.
i believe it's because while the option is there for wheel users to have a more realistic experience, most people with a wheel who spawn a car in would expect to get the feedback levels associated with not having power steering comparable to other games. for non-wheel users it makes no difference
That part only has an effect for users of steering wheels that feature force feedback. The effect it has is typically negative rather than positive, leading to a less responsive/direct force feedback. Therefore we made the "unrealistic" choice of providing better FFB by not installing powersteering by default. People without a FFB-capable steering wheel will notice no difference at all, other than seeing that dropdown empty if they visit the Parts menu.
Thank you so much for an official canonical answer, I've been thinking about why this is the way it is for a long time. Should I change the thread to say solved? eh I'll just do that regardless it makes sense to do that.
