I was thinking of getting something like an Nvidia GTX 1050ti or something since they're decently cheap. Is it worth it? My computer as an intel i3, 1tb hard drive, intel integrated graphics (4030u) and 16 gigs of RAM. is it worth it instead of buying a new computer? It's much cheaper.
First, does your computer has Thunderbolt 3? If no, then most of the external graphics can't be used. You can pick up a PCI Express-based EXP GDC, which is very cheap, but it need a lot of work to install, you can't have WiFi (in most cases) and it's not a good choice either. Get a newer laptop with dedicated graphics instead.
I don't have USB type c but there are adapters for usb type c so thunderbolt 3 should be possible, plus I'd rather not get a newer laptop because they are way harder to upgrade. My laptop has been upgraded, and it has the specs you see in the first post.
Even they are using the same port, Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Type C are different technologies. You can't use a TB3 device on a USB C port. Most USB-C laptops don't have TB3 support.
Really, I think you're better of getting a new laptop or even better, buliding a budget gaming desktop.
You have to have a thunderbolt 3 port. There's no way to make an adapter from any other interface to thunderbolt 3 either, it must exist already. If you don't have that, no external graphics card for you sadly. Either build a desktop or buy a new laptop
dont get another laptop. you gonna pay alot for something you could built your self for cheaper and more powerfull.
I mean 700 bucks and the specs are: Intel i5, 8 gigs RAM, GeForce GTX 1050, 1 tb hard drive which I would replace with my 1 tb ssd
well go for it, but like alway a laptop overheat, it has alot of thermal issue, and maybe more, keep in mind that in a laptop, they put cheap part in it, like the motherboard and maybe the ram,, and another thing, dont expect that the laptop spec would ruyn like a pc same spec, a gtx 1050 from a laptop is weaker then a 1050 in a pc.
