Hello, guys. If you're looking for a realistic sky, you can use the mod that I've created. It includes 14 different types of skies, and you don’t need to spend time on the tedious procedure of cutting images. These are global skies that will be available on all maps after installation.
I applaud your efforts but none of the skybox textures in the pack have high dynamic range (HDR), meaning the colors are much more washed out than they could be. Here is a rough comparison between SDR and HDR textures:
All the skybox textures (images) are HDR with very hight quality, sourced from "Polyhaven". Perhaps you should check your color configurations. Take a look at how it appears with normal configurations.
Stumbled upon this and noticed the install instructions: 99% (if not 100%) of the modifications can be done without ever touching the game's installation folder, which I strongly recommend as it means people can easily revert these edits without the need of redownloading parts of the game from Steam. Rather of editing the gameengine.zip you can probably install the cubemaps by replicating the same folder structure in your userfolder So instead of doing ../steam/steamapps/common/beamng.drive/gameengine.zip/art.. Do this ..userfolder/<currentVersion>/art..
