Open differentials are the most used type of differential in use as they are the most economical one. They main drawback is that they distribute torque equally to both wheels and while this is perfectly fine for normal driving conditions, it runs into some issues when one wheel has far less grip than the other. Torque (but not power) always will be equal on both wheels. It however takes very little torque to make the frontal left wheel spin on the rollers (same for ice/other poor grip ground) so only the same low torque is available on the right wheel. This identical low torque on the right wheel is however to weak to overcome the driving resistances and move the car. As a result the vehicle is stuck even though it technically has both the engine power and the grip on the right wheel to move forward.
