With the semi-recent introduction of scenarios, BeamNG's potential grew vastly. Players now have stated, concrete challenges to complete, and can share their results with other players. However, all of the scenarios are categorized in the same manner: "race." This may be for the sake of programming, since all the challenges in question involve a timer and waypoints, but it would still be nice to see a few other challenges come about (though obviously, many of these ideas are already planned).

Aside from race, the challenges would be categorized as:

    • Offroad. We do technically have some of these, but are currently marked as 'race.' Other considerations for such challenges aside from time to completion could be damage beyond a certain point[SUP]1[/SUP], and fuel consumption.
    • Derby. You. Two, three, four other cars of the same class. A contained area, probably filled with mud. One point for every car knocked out of the competition before you. Failure contingency for five seconds immobile[SUP]2[/SUP], or twenty seconds without making contact with another competitor.
    • Chase. Both a pursuit and escape version are categorized as such. Pursuit, chase down your target(s), and take them out, preferably non-sacrificially. Escape, get to the state/county line/border/rendezvous point before being incapacitated, or just lose your pursuers. Extra points in either for damage not taken.
    • Stunt. Perform any of a series of daring acts, like many of the jump challenges currently provided. Skiing (two-wheeling)[SUP]3[/SUP], doing donuts, jumping, and even film set-styled crash scenarios.
    • Navigation. The Island Cross scenario provides a viable demonstration as to what this may entail. Reach the destination via any route you wish. A timer or an odometer gauges the effectiveness of your route.
    • Delivery. You're at point A, you need to get to point B. Much like navigation, but more stock vehicles and trucks, and with possible physical loads. Points for punctuality and the good condition of the product and/or vehicle.
    • Survival. Do any menial task with a badly inept vehicle. Slalom with no right tires, safely stop a brakeless runaway truck, or make it to the destination with entirely too little fuel.
Suffice it to say that this is hardly of the most pressing urgency. The scenario mode as is will continue to provide entertainment for the competitive side of the community regardless, and many of the above will require some significant code changes and major additions to function.

If you have any ideas for other categories or challenge types, or think my categories are flawed, feel free to post away.

[SUP]1[/SUP]Damage measured in beams broken or deformed. Sanctionable damage defined by scenario creator.
[SUP]2[/SUP]Immobility would be measured by the reference node remaining within the same 0.5m[SUP]3[/SUP] area for the duration of the immobility timer.
[SUP]3[/SUP]Note that there is no simple way to determine whether the vehicle is actually skidding. My guess is that the "ref" and "left" nodes would be used to calculate the vehicle's roll. Beyond a certain point or under a certain speed, the vehicle will be marked as having fallen onto its side, rather than be skidding.
