Update 5.5 is out! After a bit of a delay, a nice holiday present from me to the community is here! Spoiler: Update 1 Tracks imported: DS Figure-8 Circuit DS Wario Stadium Spoiler: Update 2 N64 Block Fort (DS) DS DK Pass Nintendo DS Wii Luigi Circuit Wii Funky Stadium 3DS Wuhu Town (MK8) Wii Moo Moo Meadows (MK8) Spoiler: Update 3 DS Mario Circuit GCN Yoshi Circuit (MK8) DS Yoshi Falls (Wii) DS Delfino Plaza Spoiler: Update 4 Daisy Cruiser (GCN) Daisy Circuit GCN Baby Park (DS) GCN Dry Dry Desert (8) DS Desert Hills (Wii) Luigi's Mansion (DS) DS Peach Gardens (Wii) Wuhu Loop Spoiler: Update 5 SNES Rainbow Road GCN Peach Circuit (DS) N64 Mario Raceway (Wii) Spoiler: Update 5.5 DS Airship Fortress Nintendo Gamecube GCN Sherbet Land Spoiler: Update 5.6 N64 DK's Jungle Parkway (Wii) What I need help with: -How do you add time trials to a map? -is there a way to make functional boosters? -How do I make a good waterfall? -How do I make a full skybox (instead of half of one) -Can zones be made that adjust the direction/strength of gravity? Known Issues: -Courses from Mario Kart 8 are missing some foliage/objects. This is because I can't find the model for them anywhere, any help tracking them down would be appreciated -Luigi Circuit is missing a few objects. I have no idea why, but I can see them in the ingame model viewer but when they are loaded in they are invisible. If anyone can figure that out that would be great! -Sometimes the NESW in Wuhu Town just don't appear, also the textures repeat for some reason. -The speaker texture on the Nintendo DS is a triangle for some reason -Luigi's Mansion might just straight up not load? Thank you to necrolavigne for teaching me how to do alot of this!
I'll just upload these two to the main post as they are currently. Wario Stadium acts as road currently because I can't figure out how to fix it, but other than that these work pretty well. They both include the track's music because a silent Mario kart track is pretty sad. Pics:
ok so i can't help with the AI pathing but i downloaded wario stadium to see if i could help with the textures and sky stuff. hope you don't mind, i basically went thru and tweaked and cleaned up some stuff and tried to make things more similar to the level in the DS game. the scattersky i had no issues with crashing, you might need to clear your cache or smthn? and about changing the surface properties of a texture, you need to select the object with materials you want to edit (in this case, wario.dae) open the "Window" tab at the top of the editor, and select "Material Editor" from the drop down list. now you'll have a new window that lets you select the individual materials and change a bunch of settings, one being "Ground Type" all the way at the bottom under the "Additional Info" drop down. that's where you go if you want to change a surface from asphalt to dirt, etc... don't forget to click the "save current/all materials" button at the top of the window, next to the list of materials. OKAY so i got a little bit zealous and went thru all the materials and changed settings accordingly, everything should have anisotropic filtering now, things like the arrow boards and the boosts have scrolling textures and are emissive as well, and the metal lattice bridges are now double sided, and have the black bits turned transparent. one thing i couldn't get working was the mud, idk why but it refuses to behave like mud i'm attaching a zip of JUST the edits i made, you should be able to drag and drop to where you have the level saved (you should backup YOUR level before you drop my edits in tho, just in case you don't like how i did something) and for clarification, the only things i changed were the sunsky (edited most settings) theLevelInfo (changed fog values, clipping distance, and global environment map) tod (changed default start time to night, just to match the DS game) clouds, clouds1 (i disabled rendering and hid them, no values within are changed) and of course all the materials for the level were edited, nothing removed and nothing added
Thank you so much! Do you think you could DM me or something with instructions on how to do all of that so my future maps are better? I am currently using the stuff from here to figure out how to rip everything currently. Edit: Alright, I've fixed the dirt and a few textures that weren't transparent. There's this new problem where some of the terrain has some funky lighting, is that fixable? Mud-----------------------------------------------------Lighting example
Wait, I just did a whole bunch with that material editor, but when I save and quit the level all of the stuff I changed is back to how it was? The mud and other stuff I fixed were completely unchanged after quitting the map and reloading. I even tried to edit the stuff on the figure 8 circuit but same problem. Do I have to save the material edits separate from the level somehow?
I think it's possible, but I don't know how. There are these things called "Boosters" that look like they do that, but I can't get them to work.
yeah the material editor is a little unclear, up at the top where you pick the materials, next to that drop down is a floppy disc icon, that's how you save the material
oh ok, thank you! Is there a chance that I can upload the updated map with your improvements included? Edit: Actually, it seems like I have messed something up now. No matter what material I change anything to it never updates like it used to. I was able change stuff like normal before but now it's just not applying somehow? Is there some setting I accidentally unchecked? I'm sorry to keep bothering you but I am really confused
of course! you're completely free to upload with my changes, i'm glad i was able to help!! hmm for that issue, i'm not sure. i'm not an adept mapper myself, i've noticed beamng will just have issues that seem to have no clear answer. it could be how you have the map located in beamng? like if you have the zip version in the mods folder beam might be acting weird if you edit it like that. you could try moving it out of the mods folder and extracting all of it to the Levels folder and see if it behaves better, i'm not totally sure tho --- Post updated --- oh and i tried looking into the weird shading on the terrain also. it's not vertex lighting or anything like that, so i opened the model in blender and it has to do with the shading on the polygons. the mesh seems to be in chunks, all combined into one object but not connected at every vertex. what this means is the shading is effectively flat in some parts, resulting in that triangular shadow look. the unfortunate part is that this isn't something you can easily fix. it wouldn't be a grueling task or anything, but you'd need to merge and correct the shading on the polygons if you want the final thing to still look good
Updated Wario Stadium file time! (I will be updating the files on the main post as time goes on) Improvements: Actually night time now, dirt is dirt, mud is mud, stuff is no longer transparent, a whole lot of other things that just make it a lot nicer. Big thanks to necrolavigne for a bunch of help with this! Issues: W̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶s̶h̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶a̶s̶ The first time you load the map the scrolling textures will look all weird after 1 full scroll, it fixes on subsequent loads though. It does this problem every time you clear cache too so in order to fix it just reload the map. Edit: Fixed that funky shading! It looks much cleaner now Before------------------------------------------------------After
I need some help, some of the courses are doing this weird transparent-but-not(?) thing with their textures. How do I fix this? Example:
It's DS DK Pass, but I can do DK summit next if someone can help figure out these texture problems! (it happens on the wii tracks too)
hmm good point. I guess I would just have to add some sort of bridge? I would need to do the same thing to Airship Fortress, DK Mountain, Maple Treeway, and probably a few others that I can't think of right now
