is it possible to reassign nodes/beams names and locations on parts, for example for the rear bumper
without modifying the part itself, but rather the base or in this case, the body

I think... Did you use the Blender coverter or modified a stock vehicle?

i'm shortening the barstows wheelbase and therefore shortening the jbeam by one node.

so for example if the vehicles body is 9 node long the order is front to back 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and the rear bumper is connected to 9
but if i shorten it like i did so that the body is 8 node long then its 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and the rear bumper loses connection cause its still connected to 9
    which doesn't exist anymore

this means i cant use node offset to position the bumper correctly

Did you change all of the beams on the bumper from 9 to 8?

the thing is, i don't want to do that, cause then my custom bumpers wont fit both cars without having a duplicate version

Use nodeoffset. If not, just make a duplicate, only available on that frame

1.i know, but i cant use node offset anyway,
    2.was my original plan
just wanted to check, cause it would clean up the jbeam a whole lot

Defy the system. Rename the node 8 on the body to 9, so that all bumpers will still fit. You'll have a gap (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 9), but hey , it works.
