So I want to create a map based of a real location, hence I want to grab a heightmap of that area (Gloucester,UK) so I can put it into world editor and whack a google maps overlay over it to trace roads and other items accurately.

However I just can't get it to work, I'm using ChatGPT which pointed me in the direction of QGIS, exporting my file as a 16bit greyscale with a W/H of a power of 2 for Beam.ng purposes. However when it comes to creating the clipped version of the map to get the correct width and height, I just cannot get it to work.

So I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me a better way to get a heightmap from real life into beam, or what I'm doing wrong of QGIS. I'm happy to answers questions to figure stuff out of course as well.

Apologies if this is similar to another thread, thank you.

I have exactly the same problem and I'm struggling with it too. I wanted to make a map based on a real location (a different area for me, but the workflow is the same), I downloaded the elevation data, uploaded it to QGIS, cropped the area, everything looks fine... and then I export it as a 16-bit greyscale TIFF/PNG.
