    whoa what's that?
1st of all - heightmaps are black and white.
2nd - i've never seen anything like that, it looks like a strange fractal :D

You could open the image with photoshop or paint.net and use the black and white filter than save it and see if it works.

use gray-scale, it would be more accurate than "black and white"

That image just converted to greyscale would result in a spiky mess of a terrain.. I think you'll have to import / export it with different settings, if possible. I don't know what programs you used or what format it is, so it's hard to say more. Maybe post the original image here.

the one at the top is the original image. I can get the terrain as a 3d model but it results in a like 700mb .obj file (.obj is the only file I can export bar .i3d) and when I try to load it in blender crash, sketchup crash even 3d object converter crashes.

I had a look at the image in Photoshop. Strange heightmap format. Looks like you could use could get just the red channel and use it as the heightmap, but it would have large steps because it's 8 bit depth. Possibly it could be converted to 16 bits by combining the channels with the green channel at very low strength. I tried it, see if this works:

the map is going to be called Rockenstedt because it's based on fs 2013's Haggenstedt

Thank you Miura for the heightmap works perfect !

    (imported from here).

Miura do you want your name incorporated into the name of the map ? for slightly more credit than : Miura for the heightmap

divide the length of the height map by 2.

if its a 2048x2048 map then place the terrain at 1024x1024 and it should be in the center of the world.

explain in noob terms please (lol) I just need to know so I put the main farm bit in the right place

Image of the map from fs 2013

FS_EN_Map_Hagenstedt_HD.jpg So most importantly farm must be in the right place second most importantly the fields need to be in the right place which will be hard to do.

    Bonus image for everyones help

    (imported from here)

How do I make the grey parts transparent ? Do I have to do it in blender ? if so how ? (explain in noob terms(I'm still a blender noob))

sorry I thought you wanted to know how to set the terrain in the center of the world to minimize Z fighting.

If you have centered the terrain correctly then the center of the map will be at 0 x 0 x 0

if you havent centered your terrain then I guess that would be the first place to start.

no it just dumps it where the camera was when you imported the height map.

So in the scene tree manually set the terrains position to -1024 x -1024 x 0

The zero is the height and can be set to something suitable.

You don't need to. To set the terrain in the center of the map edit the terrain position in the scene tree.

    terrainthing.JPG

This it how I have it set up for a 2048 x 2048 height map.

    Hope this helps :)

    EDIT:

The terrains origin is in the corner of the terrain block so to get the center you have to divide the height maps length by 2.
    Thats why a 2048 x 2048 height map needs to be placed at -1024 x -1024
