    Idk what engine braking is.
I know that it's not stepping on the brake pedal.

A compression release engine brake, frequently called a Jake brake or Jacobs brake, is an engine braking mechanism installed on some diesel engines. When activated, it opens exhaust valves in the cylinders after the compression cycle, releasing the compressed air trapped in the cylinders, and slowing the vehicle.

Since the T-Series is a 1970s big rig, I don't think the T-Series even has an engine braking mechanism or anything of that matter.

i dont think thats what is meant here, benjamin.

engine breaking can simly refer to slowing down you vehicle by using the engine.
many people do this when driving a manual car to prevent break wear - the basic rule is that you put you car in the gear that would be needed to drive up the hill.
so on a steep hill you put the car in second or even first gear -
now the engine itself will act a bit like a damper and prevent acceleration. the car will roll down the hill without picking up speed.

to make it simple, let go of the gas and shift down one or two gears. the vehicle will slow down without using the actual breaks.
that way you prevent the breaks from overheating on long downhill passages.

Would be too cool if the Devs could add it to the T series. How to simulate it though? Exaggerated engine only braking/retardation. Add jacobs brake sound? Turn off exhaust smoke when engine brake is on, it's what they do IRL. The whole jake brake system turns the engine into an air compressor, basically.

    Look it up on youtube.

You can engine brake with any manual car including the t-series (I'm not talking about the jake brake) You need to have game in realistic transmission mode with manual clutch and you need to just let off the throttle and shift down gears as you're slowing down. It helps to save fuel and brakes. (I've tested it with T-series and D- series in 4wd and 2wd mode and it worked in both cases)

You can basically see when you're engine braking on the new drivetrain app (If beam connecting transmission to the engine is turning orange that means that you're using engine to brake)

engine braking is really loud and also it is when you shut down some cylinders to slow down and where I live it is illegal

I'm sorry, but where exactly is it illegal to engine brake?
Do you just get fined or arrested every time you take your foot off the gas pedal without shifting to neutral??

He means to use a jacob's brake, which in an urban or residential area is prohibited. It sounds something like this:

they should really add this to the game or someone needs to make a mod

Actually they cant stop you from using it. its a safety feature, my mothers half ton pickup truck has it too.

they can't stop you from killing people, either, but you'll still probably get in trouble

Generally speaking, 'engine braking' is the process of letting the vehicle slow down naturally. For example, when you lift the throttle. You can increase this amount of braking by forcing the gearbox to stay at shorter gear ratios.
In some heavy vehicles, such as some trucks, there exists a mechanism that increases the amount of braking even more. It's often called "jake brake" or "engine brake" (yep, same name as above, hence the confusion generated in this thread). This one has the disadvantage that it generates pretty loud noises, and its use is therefore prohibited in some places. This 'jake brake' system is not implemented in BeamNG.drive and is not planned to.

The in-game loading screen tooltip, which I presume is where your question comes from, refers to the former (shifting down as many gears as possible when going downhill).

I wonder, it is possible to have dynamic engine torque, so is it possible to increase dynamic torque at the runtime using LUA code?

Essentially jake brake is just multiplier to dynamic engine friction as it does plug airflow and resistance increases by RPM as it is harder and harder to compress the air faster you try to compress it and as air heats up more harder you beat, it expands more and resistance is increase, so acts like dynamic friction.

irl the jake brake in a semi is the primary braking mechanism, the actual brakes are the secondary braking system. if you're shootin for realism its kind of dumb not to add it in at some point

The only big truck in the game RN is the T-Series, which is too old for a jake brake (or so I hear.)
I believe respect and politeness comes before legality here. Yes, jake brakes may be legal in residential areas wherever you’re from, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s not cool to blast a mechanical ass trumpet down a quiet suburban street.

Quick internet search told me the jake brake was invented in 1957. So I think the T-series should have it. I'm surprised this isn't implemented in BeamNG yet. Engine simulation is one of the primary features of this game. Regular engine braking does little to slow down this truck.
