How to create animated profile picture?

How do you make a animated profile picture? I have some good ideas but don't know how to do it.

 

Use something like Gifs.com

 

Any animated image, with a .gif extension.
Type in on google images and it will come up.

 

For my avatar, I took the original image and made a bunch of copies of it. I then opened each copy in Paint.NET and edited each one. Each copy represents 1 single frame of my avatar's animation. After I finished making each copy, I stitched all the frames together using Giphy's gifmaker.
