Hi, I'm gonna upgrade my GPU, but just wanted some other people's opinions first. My current one is an AMD Radeon HD 8470 2GB, which is a pretty bad card, but will be replaced with an Asus Radeon R7 250X. Any good? Yes, I'm upgrading the PSU too. To make sure it will work well with my computer, the rest of my specs are:

    AMD A10 6700 Elite Quad Core @ 3.69 GHz
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    1TB Hard Drive
    6GB DDR3 RAM

Will I notice a difference? I play games like BeamNG, The Forest, Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 etc. I have them all at the lowest possible settings (except the textures are on low on BeamNG, but it makes no performance difference if on lowest or low) and still have some pretty bad lag at times. Would this improve it? Thanks very much!

you would notice a difference, but not a big one. if you're looking to see and feel an upgrade, you would need to save up for at least a $200 graphics card. I wouldn't recommend buying a cheaper card, because the R5 250X is just a hair better than the 8470.

Get a better GPU then you'll be set for when the time to upgrade the rest of your PC comes. I got a used R9 270 GAMING for $120. It's much better than my 650ti which I sold for $100. :D

My CPU bottlenecks it in pretty much everything but I'm planning to get a new CPU/mobo soon. (I already have the parts I want chosen, I just need another $50 or so.)

I was getting the R7 250X, not the R5 250X. Thanks though. Can you suggest any other cards that would be good? Budget is £150 including PSU.

I'd go for HD7970. Still a very fast high-end card but for mid-range card price.

In fact, even HD5870, which is five years old now, would be a bit faster than 250X...

HD 7970? that is light years away from what we're discussing here. The R9 280X is a rebranded 7970, and the R7 250X is a rebranded 7770.

And then you mention the HD 5870??

I found a few others - are they any good?

That card is way too much. I said £150 including PSU, and the card alone is £200...

Maybe you should save up some more money to buy something like a GTX 760 or 770 or R9 280, because I don't know if you're going to find a card good enough to run BeamNG and 150 pounds for a videocard + PSU is not really enough I think. Just my opinion so don't kill me. :p

I know it sounds odd but bare with me. HD7970 is relatively cheap these days, maybe twice the price of that 250X we've mentioned earlier, and you get twice the card, easily. If they say 'you should aim at £150 range to feel the gain' then my proposal gets awfully close. Also, you've accidentally backed my statement about HD5870, which was hands down a better performing card in every way compared to HD7770. It's dirt cheap now and it still would be a bit faster than 250X. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I do have more than enough money for a really good, top-end one, but I really don't wanna spend loads. I suppose I could take it up to £225.

Edit: I just remembered I can sell the old GPU for about £30, some speakers for about £20, and maybe even the old PSU?

These too seem pretty good. Both the same card, but idk which one to buy. I could just about buy this without too much guilt. :p

The HD 7970 is more than double than a 250X (as is the price), and the 5870 is old and you can only get it from second hand.

I'd say that it's pretty decent.

(Get an XFX 7850 Core Edition)

Can't get the core edition any more, but is the regular better than the R9?

The R9 is a little newer and a little faster. In terms of 3D Mark 11 and PassMark, the differences are really small, slightly in favor of the R9. The 7850 is a little cheaper. Even though the tests favor the R9, you'll only notice an estimated amount of about 4-5 frames per second difference in gaming. By "notice", I mean looking at an FPS counter. You'll never actually see the difference.

So should I get this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...-gddr5-gpu-1030mhz-boost-1120mh-plus-bf4-game
    Or this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-7850-GDDR5-Graphics/dp/B0083GA9WM

    I can get the 7850 for £3 cheaper. :p

Which is best? Obviously, I was joking, I really don't care about £3 difference, and I will get this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/530w...id-modular-80-plus-bronze-1x140mm-atx-v23-psu
Or, I could get the non-gaming edition of the r9 which is a bit cheaper - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...hz-boost-1050mhz-dvi-hdmi-mdport-plusfree-bf4

And I get a free game on the r9. And also, would both be a good match for my cpu etc? I think the rest of my pc is pretty decent (excluding gpu and psu)

Seems as how there's only a £3 difference (that's, what... Like... $6.50 USD?), I'd go with the R9. But I can tell you that the 7850 link is a higher end version of my current GPU, as it has more memory and two DVI ports. From personal experience, I can't recommend it enough, but for performance sake, the R9 is the better bet.
