A '99 Civic. (Stock plz) Though my "first car" was/is a '06 Saturn Vue. I think a SUV (Early 2000s and below) or an older sedan (Definately early 2000s and below) would be a nice starter vehicle. Gas mileage may not be all that great (because older vehicles) but I think they'd be a nice starter.
Honda civic. cheap to run, cheap to maintain and its the car that kids like. Its basically the Beetle for the modern age.
Cheap. You can get a really solid car for very little, but you'll need to know how to pick them. Be ok with driving a beater and step up after a year or 2. I've been thru many cars. All of them cheap and solid. Very replaceable.
Something big and heavy i guess, like a Ford Crown Victoria or a primered and beat to hell 1980's F-body.
Maybe bmw 3 series but depends if you get the old ones cheap in america or not as long as you go with the 6 cylinder e46 or e36 theyll last forever and were i love you can get good ones for 1000 euros sometimes but they got alot of kilometeres on the clock then
But it's enough to bring your Russian slav's to Chernobyl. OT: i would say that aside from primered 3rd gen Camaro's and Crown Victoria's, mid-80's Chevy Caprices also make for a good first teenage car, first, you can live in the spacious rear area, second, you can bring your friends and drive drunk without worrying about the wood paneling.
I drove a $600 dollar 88 4cyl Mustang for the first 8 years of my driving career... would still be driving it if the transmission didn't die. Got great gas mileage even when you're all over the accelerator and goes slow enough that it's still fun to drive, but you will never get pulled over for a ticket unless you are very committed. Also if you get the hatchback version, if you put down the rear seats you have almost as much carrying capacity as a 6ft bed truck.
