status update. still havent restarted. want to see how far this goes
In case anyone is interested, here's the livestream for the AMD Zen public reveal. Starts in two minutes from this post.
kind of a big deal
- The desktop Zen CPU is called "Ryzen"
- >40% improvement in IPC
- Base clock is 3.4GHz and higher
- Boost frequencies are much higher, still TBA
- 20MB cache
- CPU will prefetch and preprocess instructions
- Maximum boost frequency automatically scales with cooling
- 95W TDP
Ryzen @ 3.4GHz VS i7 6900K @ 3.7GHz (both 8c/16t)
- Ryzen matches or slightly exceeds (~10%) the Intel chip (at lower frequency!) in all tests
- 95W TDP vs 140W TDP
Hopefully they get it to market in a competitive time frame.
Depending on cost and how Zen performs, I might go team red. I haven't had an AMD CPU in my main PC since the single core Athlon days.
I have never had an AMD CPU in anything, have had an ATI GPU though if that counts
My current CPU is still strong enough for the time being so it will likely remain as is, but it is certainly an option for the future. Since my current build is pretty full, in the next one I might decide to go for a more minimalist approach, in which case an AMD GPU may even be on the cards depending on what is hot at the time (hopefully not in a fire spewing molten cored sort of way).
I badly need an upgrade and Ryzen looks good, very good. However, its all depending on price.
Not to mention I've been seriously considering getting an engineering sample Xeon and for the money its absolutely insane the price that you pay to get a 12 core 24 thread CPU, obviously they are clocked a little slower with the E5-2690 v3 ES only being 2.4Ghz vs the final 2.6Ghz, not a big deal and at $300 shipped to me in the UK that is insanely tempting. They also have some compatibility issues with motherboards however most of the ebay sellers I've seen have a list and will be able to check compatibility before purchase for any motherboard.
Best listing I've seen so far is this, lots of detail and one of the cheaper of the bunch http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-...e-with-X99-i7-6850K-6900K-6950X-/162275415067
Going to wait to see how AMD does with overall bomb cost in terms of both CPU and motherboard combined though as the LGA2011-3 motherboards have some serious pricing.
Im exited for the vega graphics card they presented because im looking for one and i want an amd so i might get the vega one when its out
Just got a new rig! This one has a video capture card, among other things.
Although... it only runs at 266 MHz, and the video capture card tops out at 480i, and it's analog, and it's a PowerPC Mac from 1997, and it runs OS 9...
Hey, at least I can stream Kid Pix now
I just bought this fairly sad looking T430i I think £80 is a fairly good deal, upgrade it to a quad I7 and get a higher res screen. Better then buying a BOTL model for £300 from some sleazy eBay "Refurbisher"
That's uh... quite a chip.
4GB of RAM is also quite low but it might be fine depending on what you're using it for.
Good luck with the repair and upgrade!
I'm happy with my T420 as it is. I might eventually re-paste the CPU and GPU and get something to go in the hole where the RJ11 port would be.
I already got 2 x 4GB stick's in my big bag o' RAM to go in. Not worried about the chip, the lower plastics for these things are cheap and the screen in my E420s will fit straight in for now. I'm glad you're happy with your T420, ThinkPads are great laptops, I wouldn't swear by them otherwise. Have you thought about getting one of these little rubber RJ11 blanks? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Rub...541400?hash=item5424327cd8:g:LX8AAOSwJ7RYTp-H
Now that's a possibility. I'll keep that in mind. Though I could use insulation tape instead.
The CeX store here has an X220i (i3-2350M), two T410's (i5-430M), a T420 (i5-2520M) and an E540 (i3-4000M). The prices are... a bit high (£205, £235, £260, £255).
I just look at them whenever I'm in there.
Back when I was in college a CeX opened and we'd go in there every day and look at all the overpriced crap they had like a GTX 260 for £50.
I always thought the same but their site seems to have some really good deal, I noticed a HD 7870 and GTX 650 for £30. Well they are good deals compared with most eBay ones at least. Stock is always a problem though online.
Also, I think I've finally decided on getting a Xeon, its either going to be an E5-2690 v4 or an E5-2690 v3, the v3 is £40 less but its also two cores shorter at 12 vs the v4's 14 cores. Both are engineering samples so the clock speeds out of the box are a little lower but they boost pretty well. I was going to wait to see what AMD have with Ryzen but not much can beat a $300 12 core CPU.
Attempting to watch 4K video in Microsoft Edge on Xbox One yields some interesting results.
I wonder if the Xbox One S could do it, since it can stream video in native-4K. However, it only upscales games to 4K, as it isn't powerful enough to render in 4K.
Resemble's an acid trip.
Well my ThinkPad is here, quick dig through my parts bin and I did have a prestine 1366 x 768 screen to throw in it, re pasted the CPU and installed my 8gigs of ram, This model also has the backlit keyboard which is a nice bonus and the main reason I wanted a T430 USB 3.0. Gave it a nice thorough bath with some isopropyl on a microfiber cloth and a old toothbrush to get under the keyboard, it's now surgery theater clean because germophobia...
Sold my GTX 970 to a friend for a good price. I'm sort of glad I got rid of it, Nvidia rubbed me the wrong way and it's only losing value. He gave me a GTX 560Ti for the meantime. I don't know what I'm going to get to replace my 970, but I think it'll probably be a RX 490 whenever it comes out. Or maybe I'll go back to Nvidia and get an GTX 1160 or 1170 when those come out.
Hmm, I wonder how the Kaby-Lake integrated graphics would run BeamNG? My cousin's boyfriend played Overwatch on his XPS 13 with a Core-i3 7100u, it was surprising how powerful the iGPU was, and it's likely better on desktop CPUs.
New version of DOS just released!!!
