A vehicle simulator forum is not exactly a fitting place to discuss this, but oh well, at least we wont get bombarded with flat earthers in this part of the internet. (hopefully) I watched a live stream of the Falcon 9 Block 5 launch today (the launch was ultimately cancelled until tomorrow), and the comments section was riddled with flat earth trolls. Seriously, how is this stupidity still such a big thing on the internet? I am honestly completely baffled at how there are humans on this planet that are capable of being so utterly retarded, and then have the audacity to proudly preach their beliefs on the internet. They twist any evidence they find to fit their flat earth theory, contradict themselves, completely ignore solid evidence that backs up the truth that earth is round, insult others when they have been proven wrong, deny that they have done anything unscientific, and accuse others of the exact things they are pulling, and they get tons of attention while they're at it. I'll give them credit for one thing, and that is that some of them are masters of their trade. (misleading people for attention) I'm just sick of all this stupidity. What are your thoughts about this, and what funny/infuriating experiences have you had with these people?
Yep. Most of them do it because they know it's a big thing and they want attention and money. The problem, i think, is that some people actually believe them.
who can actually bother to care? internet opinions are meaningless, and even if real people actually believe it, it won't affect anything in your life. i meme the flat earth tbh.
Reminds me of the tide pod memes. Some people spread them because of a so stupid its kinda funny thing, and then some people of lesser intelligence started actually eating the things. I was one of the ones spreading the tide pod meme, but never would I have considered actually eating one... and I assumed everyone else knew it was all a joke. ... I had too much faith in humanity apparently.
I agree. It's just annoying when i want to enjoy a rocket launch livestream, but the comments are so spam-filled that you cant peacefully discuss what is happening. Very truthful meme indeed, btw. --- Post updated --- Wow, i hadn't heard about that. Who would be dumb enough to eat one of those... oh well, hopefully they possess the intelligence to learn from their mistake.
It's ridiculous how they believe that. Here's so reasons why I find it to be BS. I could probably list more later. - How would the planet be able to keep all of the water? If the Earth was indeed flat, all of the water would eventually spill into space. I heard one argument about Antarctica being an ice wall. However, there's no telling how heavy all of the Earth's oceans are, but it'd probably be heavy enough to push Antarctica off, so drainage would still be very much possible. - How would you explain the Sun and Moon's orbit? And actually make sense? - How would you explain the tides? - And what about the other planets in our solar system? Why would they be spherical and not Earth? And as above, how would you explain their position in the sky? - The stars. If the Earth was flat, there would be certain stars you wouldn't be able to see. - What about the fact that you can see the Earth's curvature when you get up high enough? I heard it's around 35,000 ft. - Here's another thing to explain, the atmosphere. How would you explain that? - Why would we not find the edges? There's just so much I find to be BS about thinking the Earth is flat.
Flat earthists have said that trees are fake and gouvernment tools to promote gas prices They also said that jet fuel couldn't melt steel beams Thanks George Bush
Yeah, their arguments are so easy to shut down. They believe that the earth disc is constantly accelerating at a rate 9.8 m/s squared. If that was true, the earth would reach the speed of light in under a year. They also think the sun is a spotlight that shines on only half of the world at a time, and that it is close to the surface. They think that all of this is enclosed underneath an impenetrable dome, and that beyond the dome is an infinite expanse of water. How do they explain the moon, planets, and stars? Why, they deny their existence, of course. --- Post updated --- I heard one of them say that mountains are just giant petrified tree stumps. I heard another say that mountains are not formed by plate tectonics, but are actually the petrified remains of giant beasts that were killed during the flood described in the bible. Seriously, how do they come up with this stuff?
They seem to think that the South Pole is some kind of barricaded icewall, where government try to hide the edge. Explain why for half a 100 grand you can take a one week tour of the south pole? https://antarctic-logistics.com/trip/south-pole-flights/
If it could accelerate to such speeds, the planet would probably be ripped to shreds by the force. I've heard about their spotlight theory, and I can easily debunk it. Here's some of their models. For number one, if it was true, you would actually STILL be able to see the Sun and the Moon. They would simply behave like an aircraft doing circles in the sky, as if the pilot lost his mind. For the second one, what about the fact when the Sun and Moon rises and sets, they curve around in the sky? If the second model was correct, they would have a perfect linear path across the sky. And if the Earthian disc rotated, their movement would look extremely awkward. OMFG are you effing shitting me? Mountains are formed when plates of the Earth's crust collides. That's how many mountains like the ones that make the Himalayas was formed. And there's no way mountains can be petrified monsters. I've never heard of giant monsters that happen to be mountain shaped. Trees can't do that either. Even the largest tree on Earth isn't mountain sized, and most of where its size comes from I believe is underground. I don't think, I know the possibility of the Baltic Sea Anomaly being a fossilized alien spaceship holds more ground than this shit.
I heard one of them say that mountains are just giant petrified tree stumps. I heard another say that mountains are not formed by plate tecto It's hard for me to believe too, but i actually did see somebody say that. Completely mind-blowing how somebody can be that dumb. That's ok though, while these people deny the facts to the day they die, we will be able to go on space tours in the future thanks to Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.
Providing you have a few hundred grand, sure. Space travel wont become cheep for more then a century.
It's true that not everybody will be able to afford it soon, but if SpaceX uses the BFR for earth to earth transport, then maybe we will be able to go to space for the price of flying on a plane withing the next couple decades. Just speculation really. Who knows?
I think Carbo has a good point. A couple of decades sounds too fast. Around 500 - 1000 years sounds more likely. That's if we make it that far.
