    After reading a few opinion discussion threads I decided to start another one.

    BeamNG is getting friendlier and friendlier for non-wheel users, and unlike most other driving/racing games, the steering assistants in BeamNG is highly customizable. This raises a question: What are the best settings?
    Unfortunately there are no best settings as driving in different vehicles on different surfaces with different controller all require different settings.

    This thread is for the discussion of the use of the steering assistants with various controllers.

    Note that for realism, the assistants should be all unchecked if you are using an FFB-wheel, if any of these is on, your wheel might behave erratically.

    For non-wheel player, it might be preferred to use "Wheel(direct)" in some situations for maximum reaction speed. Many thanks to @stenyak and other developers for adding an option for the assistants to work on "Wheel(direct)" filter.

    My controller is this, which is effectively a more precise joystick.

    Before the update, there was only one "limit steering at speed" option, which reduced and slowed down the steering speed, and the limitation is present regardless of sliding angle, making countersteering difficult at high speed.

    Now the "Limit steering at high speed" retains full countersteering range according to the sliding angle, which means that it's possible to turn the steering wheel at full lock in a slide, even when you are driving at 200+ km/h.

    There are two parts of the steering angle, the theoretical one and the slipping one. The higher the speed, the larger the turning radius, the lower the theoretical steering angle. However in actual driving, the deflection of the contact patch cannot be ignored. Thus the "Limit max angle to" should be set to the best sliding angle of the tires, and the "Start at" should be set to the speed where the vehicle experience max turning G at full steering lock. I don't know the best value of the "Stop at" yet.
    Note that this setting is best for tarmac driving, tire grip on other surfaces. is different and more often than not, powersliding is faster on gravel so you might want to uncheck this on rally stages.

    During an oversteer, the countersteer "window" is narrow, countersteer too little is as good(or bad) as not countersteer at all, while countersteer too much will result in a fishtail. By adjusting the "Oversteer reduction assistant" we are tuning the steering angle into said window, resulting in a balanced handling during an oversteer moment. For FWD vehicles this assistant is rarely needed since you can just floor it to understeer the vehicle. For BeamNG-official drift vehicle, the default value(100%) is used and for most street-legal RWD vehicles, 130% is preferred.

    For tuning the "Understeer reduction assistant" use the Wheel Debug UI app, the grey circles represent slip. Simply drive at moderate speed and hold the left or right arrow key to perform a steady turn. Adjust the strength so that the grey circles of the front wheel is between 1/4 to 1/2. Personally I only use this assistant when driving with keyboard as I can always apply partial steering when using a joystick. Again, this assistant works best on tarmac.

    I don't use the "Slower steering at speed" assistant.

    Feel free to post your own settings with the controller that you use.

    I use a ps5 controller and I used a video from dytastic but changed deadzone start to 0. It works well but how the hell do you play comfortably with an RC controller? Anyway, I'll try your settings some time. Also I don't use any assists other than limit steering at high speed which is on the vid

    I'm one of the keyboard elite master race, I really like the understeer reduction filter, but I find the oversteer reduction kind of unintuitive, either on mild or heavy, and I generally avoid oversteering cars anyway due to my superior control scheme.

    The steering assists work much better than I could have imagined. I play mainly on controller.(Xbox)

    If I'm drifting I turn the understeer reduction off and maybe slightly reduce the oversteer reduction. (I'll have to try increasing it to 130% and see how it feels)

    I find the oversteer reduction just saves you from spinning out most of the time and surprisingly doesn't seem to hamper my drifts (I am in no means an amazing drifter)

    If I am sliding around in an AWD car going crazy on the handbrake entering backwards into corners I find the assists really start to get in the way. But that is to be expected.

    Otherwise driving around normally, racing or hooning around I can't praise the steering assists more.

    Thanks to everyone who chimed in about making this change. It's so easy to overlook things when there's such a rich variety of driving styles and input devices out there, so community input (hah.) is essential!

    A further clarification here: the understeer assistant auto-disables itself on loose surfaces, as there's normaly zero understeer in those situations (for example, if you are crazy enough to rally a car with a extreme drift steering kit in gravel, it's safe to assume the disabled understeer assistance is going to be the least of your driving problems :D).
