Can someone help me with figuring out what each button means?

Sorry, I am very new with pc gaming as a whole and I know I will completely come off as a novice, but I need help.

I've been trying to get my ps3 controller to work. I go into "controllers" from the main menu and after I plug in my ps3 controller it says "joystick0". It also shows the hardware as being a playstation 3 controller. So i think the game at least detects it which is a first. There is input, but the game doesn't know what to do with that input. None of the controls are mapped out yet. Under the "PlayStation 3" in the hardware section of "controllers", it has a series of numbers ranging from 0-20. What does that mean? Which one is the x-button, triangle button, triggers, etc? I'm just very confused with the whole process.

    Hello,
The numbers are each button or axis. If you use the physical controls, the input screen will highlight the corresponding button.

You can then choose an "action" on the top left, click "save", and the new binding will be listed on the right side.

Thanks for replying. What number corresponds with each button? For example, If I wanted to make the right trigger acceleration, how would I do that?

    1. Press the right trigger in your controller.
    2. Select accelerate_direct or accelerate in the dropdown.
    3. Click save.

To know which number is which button, just start pressing the buttons, and they will be highlighted on screen (or at least they should be! if they don't that's a bug)

They aren't lighting up. It's probably not a bug, it's probably just me being a fool again when it comes to computers. I attempted to get my ps3 controller to at least be recognizable by the game by watching various tutorials on youtube, but they always ended up getting too complicated and confusing for me. i can't find just 1 simple step by step tutorial for dummies from plugging the controller in the computer via usb cable to using it in the game. At least none have been dumbed down enough for me.

Ok. To completely rule out BeamNG as the possible problematic piece of puzzle, please open your Windows Control Panel, look for Game Controllers option. If your device does not appear there, you may need to install drivers.
If the device is there, click on "Properties" to see what buttons/axis are available, it should closely match what BeamNG "controllers" menu shows.

Generally, you need an xInput wrapper to use a Playstation controller on PC, as they are directInput devices. Most games use xInput these days, finding directInput support is exceedingly rare. I don't believe BeamNG supports directInput. Please, devs, correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the recommended wrapper these days. You can skip the stuff pertaining to Bluetooth if you just want it cabled. Using a PS3 controller will always be fiddly, but with basic technical knowledge it's perfectly serviceable. I actually use my PS3 controller for BeamNG this way. MotionInJoy used to be the popular solution, but it's adware and does some really fishy stuff, so it isn't really recommended any more.

For the most seamless (and less frugal) experience across pretty much any game with gamepad support newer than 2006, get a Wired XBox 360 controller.

We support both XInput and DirectInput controllers, all of them should show up in the "controllers" menu if the corresponding drivers are working :)
XBox360 and XBox One gamepads have been tested (both XInput devices), as well as some Playstation-like clone controllers (all of them DirectInput devices) and several steering wheels (again, all DirectInput devices).

Good to know, and good on you guys for supporting DirectInput. Looks like you might have a bug on your hands after all. I wish I could be of more help with finding a solution, but won't have access to my PS3 hardware for another few days.

Yes, that is helpful. Can you please take a screenshot of your beamng.drive "controllers" menu, and also attach the torque3d.log file located in mydocuments/beamng.drive/ please? Thanks!

Sorry. I had to wait for the game to update. Also in the picture it says "keyboard", but I do have the joystick0 option. I just forgot to put it on when capturing the screen.

Everything looks fine. Does nothing at all change on the left column when you press a button in your controller?

Yea nothing changes. I was thinking about just getting a wired 360 controller as someone already suggested. It's not too complicated to get that set-up is it?
