So if you damage the piston rings and the car starts burning oil when you run out of oil the car should stop smoking as there is no more oil to burn. Same with a headgasket failiure if the car runs out of coolant then there is no more coolant left to enter the combustion chamber and it should no longer smoke out the exhaust or steam out of the radiator.
