It's quite interesting, especially when it involves a topic that you care about. It's not only kids. I mean, who wouldn't want to find and be able to play the oldest (and lost) versions of Beam? It's a part of Beam history and therefore should be found and preserved. This thread is a pretty good idea.
Because they have grown up with the internet, where everything is practically permanent, and thus they are fascinated by the concept of things having a finite lifespan.
You can easily find 0.4.0.6 in the Steam Betas if you own BeamNG on Steam. I've tried it myself a couple of times!
there is a way thru wayback machine to find a techdemo link that to this day still works its the v2.0 and v2.1 --- Post updated --- https://www.beamng.com/techdemo/BeamNG-Techdemo-v2.1.zip found it
Wait, so the techdemo IS gone then. I used it back before I bought beam to see if I really wanted it. A friend of mine wanted to try beam on his PC, so I went to get it for him just to find that it wasn't on any official websites anymore. Wonder why they got rid of it. Edit: Also, it seems this one has the covet while the one I played had the d-series. There's not even a d-series in the files here. Wonder how many versions of the techdemo are out there, and if it's possible to get the d-series one back.
There are 2 techdemos, 2.1 with the D-series, which IIRC was the first public release of the game, and "0.3" with the covet, which came out some time later. From what I recall, 0.3.0.0 was the first "full" public release of the game, and the "0.3" demo was probably built on something like 0.3.3 or 0.3.4. Recently, a previously unknown "1.0" version was leaked, which had a bunch of incomplete content (and a very buggy backend) in it, which supposedly was accidentally uploaded on the forums back in 2013.
I can't find the source for it anymore, but there was an old official dev made video of a red ornithopter flying around. I think it was to show off how in depth the physics system was or something. If someone can find the video that'd be awesome.
0.3.7.6 has been found. Anyway, there's a lot of versions lost. Most of the patches between 0.3 and 0.3.3 are lost, including 3.1 and 3.2. 0.3.4, most of 0.3.6, 0.3.7, and 0.3.8.2 and 8.3 are also lost. 0.3.5 doesn't exist btw, they skipped it
