(If you're unfamiliar with STOL planes: ) I came across the Cessplane L19 mod recently and absolutely loved it, especially flying/landing around Johnson Valley. It got me thinking about the possibility of bush flying becoming a serious part of BeamNG, because while MSFS is great for what it is, it has major flaws especially when it comes to flying STOL/bush planes. For example, while the photogrammetry creates great visuals from a distance, it very quickly falls apart the closer you look at it. Buildings and roads look strange, the ground is a lot flatter than reality (bumps, dips, and rocks/boulders are almost non-existant), and the worst part are the random "seams". Let's say you're trying to land on a grassy field or a salt flat in the middle of nowhere. Most of the time because of how Bing Maps works, there's a massive seam/ledge that ends up grabbing the wheels and causing the plane to violently flip over or get dragged under the map, it's endlessly frustrating. BeamNG's maps however, are already perfect for STOL flying, especially Johnson Valley and Utah. They're large (for a slow flying STOL plane, atlantic crossings aren't happening lol), highly detailed and with a nice variety of places to land and take off (that isn't a runway/strip). I'll admit that I'm kind of a noob when it comes to BeamNG, but I think the bones are there for something that no flight simulator today can actually provide.
I agree, all you'd really need to make it workable is some way to have wind speed and direction automatically fluctuate, which i'd imagine is already possible with LUA.
