I have been using autodesk inventor for a couple years now and today I found that I can import autodesk files (Saved as STL) to blender.

Is it possible to use the blender jbeam device and other blender based methods on an object that has been transferred to blender? Also, are there any problems with this method?

a lot would not recommend industrial design softwares such an inventor to make video game assets for multiple reason. they can be quite high poly and messy. but nothing stops you from trying.

Can you export the model as a .dae in inventor? You can import the dae into blender, then it should work fine.

If you save it as an .STL file, you should be able to import it into Blender with no issues... again though, there is no knowing how many random polly's are going to be created when you go about this process. I have a half decent Egoista that I made in Inventor, but I have never transferred it over because I always assumed it would be a mess. If you do try it and are successful however, I and many others I am sure, would be very interested in the results!

It does work, I have tried it with basic objects. The only problem is that any curves in it get converted to faces. For example, I made a 6 inch cylinder extruded 4 inches. Converted to blender, it turned into an octagon.

No. Autodesk Inventor is absolute crap. I use it at school and it's good for next to nothing if you want to model something worthwhile like a car. I highly recommend 3DS Max or maybe Blender instead.
