It is not dead, but as it is one of the main features of the game, it will probably be available when most of the other pieces of the game are together. Game is in Early access and still in Alpha stage, so not all features are not yet built.

Meanwhile you might try Scenarios which you can download more here:

It's being worked on. Being a big thing, it needs quite some time and a lot of organization/efforts.
    No dates as of yet.

Then again.... In the game trialer, they said, "Were working on a open world career mode" 5 years and NOPE!
Not trying to diss the devs, but still.

To be fair the dev team is microscopic, and they have given an incredible amount of improvement into the engine.

I think they’ve got their head on straight.

Last time I checked, the game is still in something called "Early Access," meaning that major features aren't released yet, but are being worked on. They are still working very hard to get the game to a state where having a career mode wouldn't be entirely useless (what would be the point if the only map we had was gridmap and the only vehicle being a late 80s truck).

Career mode requires *a lot* of planning to get through it nicely.
In these years we have majorly worked on the engine-side: modifying, add things, removing others toward what's needed for that mode. Aside the planning itself It's a long and tedious process.

Ultimately it needs time, but is being done

Especially working on career mode with a game that has a physics engine that has only been used in one other game (RoR)

We did some internal prototypes... only to find out that our scenario system needs a complete rework to be flexible enough to support nice gameplay. But we are working on all the concepts of it right now. So please stay tuned and give us the time to deliver a nice experience :)

RoR physics engine is completely different, sure there are nodes and beams, they are using soft body physics, but that is about it really, they are very different physics wise.

    //////////////////

I wonder how many realizes that development is not really going from A to B, B alone is not really taking final shape before you are already well under way and there usually is quite many other stops to visit, which are completely unknown at early part of the trip, it is not really possible to go directly to B unless project is really really simple.

So many things affecting other things that no one can predict them all and to complicate things further, 10 years is long time, everything changes in computer world in 10 years, in 5 years already there is significant changes that probably allow more awesomeness, so it is kinda hard to predict anything, which often leads to things needing reworking etc.

It is not so that one takes task and completes that task, it is more of while doing the task, one learns new tasks that are required to be completed in order to be able to complete original task.

Much easier if you make something like remakes using old existing ways, that however is not path of pioneers.

I meant softbody physics, not the nodes and beams and stuff
