Currently there are 2 gearbox modes for the player to choose: Arcade and Realistic.

With arcade you just need to use your throttle and brake pedals/buttons to make the vehicle go forward or backwards. So if you press the brake, and vehicle comes to a stop, and you keep holding the brake, the brakepedal will suddenly work as a throttle for the reverse gear. Just like other games with this kind of arcade behavior.

With realistic you need to shift the gears yourself, even if the vehicle has an automatic transmission. So you come to a stop, and you need to shift into reverse. The throttle pedal will always act like a throttle, the brake will always act like a brake.

    Here is my suggestion:
An additional gearbox mode that sits in between those two modes. So it will upshift and downshift by itself, even if the car is equipped with a manual transmission. But when you come to a stop, and you hold the brake pedal, it will not go in reverse. The player needs to shift into neutral and into reverse. Then the throttle will act as throttle, the brake as brake. So with this new gearbox mode, the only gear changes the player can make, is shifting between Forwards, Neutral, and Backwards. Note how I said Backwards and not reverse, as some trucks can come with multiple reverse gears. In this gearbox mode that shifting between R1 and R2 will be done automaticly.
Another example. In this new mode, the player drives a manual car, half throttle, going like 60 or so. The car is in 4th gear. When the player then shifts down, the car will not go into 3rd, but rather into Neutral. If the player then again shifts down, the car will go into Reverse.

Some name suggestions for this new gearbox mode:
    - semi-arcade
    - simplified realistic
    - controlled arcade

    TL;DR
In summary: a new gearbox mode where the player can only choose between Forwards, Neutral, and Backwards. Throttle pedal will always act as throttle, brake will always act as brake.

    Yes please!
This gearbox even is helpful on my high end sim rig because i have loadcells which naturally makes the amount of force you use for braking higher
This makes driving in reverse require you to put full braking force just to drive in reverse which is ridiculous
The only solution is to use full manual which either not everyone want to do or just straight up dont have an H pattern

in American truck simulator and Euro truck simulator 2 when using the Real Automatic gearbox mode it behaves exactly how this "Semi-Arcade" Gearbox would and its much more comfortable with loadcell brakes

i think what you are looking for is an automatic transmission on the realistic transmission setting
if your specific car doesnt have an automatic trans just use https://www.beamng.com/resources/rks-highly-customizable-transmissions.31115/
should work with all vanilla cars

This would be awesome. Then I might actual use arcade transmission behavior!

But what if we don't want to use a slushbox or mods in our vanilla 800 HP track beast?

not all automatic transmissions are slushboxes

Either way, I want to be able to tune each gear instead of " use the stock automatic and hope for the best".

I usually make configs without mods if I can.

Having to resort to mods is the exact reason why this has been suggested as a vanilla feature
Yes you can just use a automatic in realistic and it behaves as an automatic but thats more like a bandaid fix than what we suggested and without mods isnt possible on every car Nor do i want to go and put a real automatic in a car like the bruckel nine which is perfectly fine on the arcade mode with its normal gearbox minus the issues arcade has
The semi-arcade setting would still keep the original gearboxes in the cars and they would still behave exactly the same as they do on the arcade setting already But it would just change it around so the brake pedal isnt also the reverse

Plus with all the controller assists the devs have been cooking lately i find it hard to believe they would be against adding a semi-arcade shifting assist like this in vanilla

Another problem i have with the shifting in beamng is in the T series and MD with the splitter not being part of the arcade system so your 10 speed is now only a 5 speed until you manually switch it as opposed to ATS/ETS2 that just works properly regardless of if you use the more arcade shifting or the full manual
