An option that could be added alongside the regular system: Rather than going in gear with synchro damage, a mistimed attempt to float gears could/should result in the gear NOT being selected and FFB vibration, until the gear either goes in or the gear shifter is returned to a neutral position.
I had hoped this was already the case in the game. I’ve developed a force feedback shifter for ATS and have just purchased and am installing Beamng to see if I can make it work with trucks in this game in a similar way. Are you saying the game doesn’t include non synchronized transmissions like the Eaton Fuller crash box? I thought the game had some American trucks modded! Are they all automatics?
The only official semi truck of BeamNG, the Gavril T-Series, does not feature a non-synchronised transmission even though it should, nor does any other car in the game I'm afraid. I still like to double clutch when driving the T-Series for the sake of a realistic driving experience. It is of course obsolete, but one can do it.
I just had a drive around with the default truck and unfortunately it’s lacking in the gearbox department. I couldn’t even find an 18speed. It seems to be limited to 5 speed with a high and low range which for some reason is called a splitter in settings? There was a mod for an 18 speed with range and splitter which I installed but it doesn’t appear to be currently working. I was able to float gears which is promising but it still appears the synchro is playing a part. If rpm is wrong it looks like it registers as damage as opposed to not going into gear. I’ll play around another bit with it.
I just found the T-series drivetrain expansion mod which includes the 18 speed Eaton Fuller transmission and a working range and splitter. Completely changes how the default truck drives and gives me something to work from. Not sure if my force feedback shifter can be made to work due to how the game simulates synchro damage. If it just registered the damage without also implementing the gear change then I think I could make it work. Unfortunately, as it stands the gear change happens regardless.
I’ve been twinsticking it with that mod. First time in any sim I’ve been able to plug in a second shifter and do the Spicer thing. But honestly, the Eaton 18 is more satisfying to drive around in a video game for some reason.
I think part of that is the Eaton 18 can be simulated more closely and is just much a more intuitive transmission IRL. As much as I love the old-school Spicer Twins having nicely spaced and non-overlapping gears is so nice especially when you need to drop many gears quickly or your forgot which gear you were in.
