There is an online program that allows you to plan a route using Google Maps - and instead of routing by destination as Google Maps itself does, this program allows you to create the route yourself. It was mainly intended to help runners and bicyclist plan their workouts, hence the name, gmap-pedometer. At some point, however, someone figured out it could be adequately kludged to make automobile racetracks instead. I've done this many, many times over the past several years and decided I'd make a thread for it here. I'll start with a few of mine, to show sort of how it's done. Many of these have shorter versions I'm too lazy to post here. For Anchorage and Vancouver they can often be found by manually increasing the number in the URL by one or more. Vancouver, B.C., Canada - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6511072 Anchorage, Alaska, U.S.A. - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6648325 - A part of this track is taken from one formerly used in real life Anchorage (Merrill Field) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6648366 Anchorage (University) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6649218 Anchorage (24h) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6649234 Noumea, New Caledonia, France - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5781709 - longest and twistiest of several I did Wasilla, Alaska - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6648376 - My hometown. Cuts through a residential area, which is something I usually try to avoid now. Rio de Janeiro - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6483979 Rio de Janeiro (24h) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6484478 - Super long route, can lag really slow computers. Some of the roads can be narrow and not well-kept, but should all be paved. Tokyo (24h) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6483972 - WARNING: This route is a hair over 57 miles (almost 92 km) long and has a tendency to pwn slow computers. Nome, Alaska - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6649235 Nome (24h for 4x4s/rally cars) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6649244 - Would be highly dangerous in real life, due to at least two instances in which the course runs dead straight (and probably downhill) for well over a mile at a time, as part of a larger ultra-fast downhill "straightaway" which is about 4.5-5 miles long. Not to mention another mile-long almost-straight - on dirt this time. Nome (24h for race cars) - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6649262 - I hope the north section is all paved, but I really can't be sure. If you want to join in, go to www.gmap-pedometer.com, go to an area you think might be good for racing, click "start recording", and double-click to set the start point. Set each waypoint with a double-click and the site will fill in the path between them. Assemble a loop (or rally stage, or whatever you feel like) in this manner, add a name and description if you feel like it, and link the result here.
Chuck -- I found your post when searching for forums about fictional race track design. I've been active in a couple other pages that might interest you...have a look at them: http://www.racedepartment.com/forums/forum-games.325/ http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/groups/f...ing_wp_cron=1421782254.8437139987945556640625 http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146008 If you want to start something similar here, I'd be all over it!
Ok I'll get it started on a new thread --- Post updated --- Check out the new thread today...I'm posting a new challenge for the weekend. Probably give people 4-5 days to submit something.
