A versatile full-size SUV, now federalized for the United States!

Please note that this is an add-on for the Procyon Centauri mod by Finn Wilkinson. You must have the original mod (tested on versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5) installed for this add-on to work correctly! The game version must also be at least 0.26 or later! (If using game version 0.26, then use mod version 1.0.4; 0.27 and later game versions should use mod version 1.0.5 and later.) You can download the vehicle mod here: https://beamng.com/resources/2022-procyon-centauri.24393/

Upon release, the Procyon Centauri mod is, in my opinion, one of the best lore-friendly vehicle mods of the year. But one notable omission is a lack of USDM configurations. Then I realized that the reason there existed no such configurations is because the vehicle is primarily intended for Europe and Japan.

After getting confirmation from Finn that there are no official plans to make a US-spec Centauri (in addition to getting his permission and an acknowledgement from Theo as well), I decided to make a small, but meaningful add-on to make the vehicle legal in the United States.

    The Lore:
After Procyon revealed the Centauri in late 2021, the large luxury SUV has been well-received among the public. Production and sales began not long after in early 2022. However, due to supply chain issues affecting the global automotive industry at the time, the company was forced to limit sales to Europe and Japan for the first 6 months. Eventually, they were able to keep up with the demand, and announced it would start offering the Centauri for the North American market in late 2022 in order to compete with the large luxury SUV segment.

Because Americans have bought more SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks in recent years, Procyon believed their flagship SUV would sell well in one of the largest vehicle markets in the world. Minor exterior changes were made to the Centauri. When combined with EPA emission certification and excellent crash test results, the SUV has now been federalized for the United States.

    What's Added:
    • Side marker lights that double as reflectors. They are mounted onto both the front and rear wheel arches. This is mandatory for vehicles sold in the US due to safety reasons. They are available for all wheel arch options.
    screenshot_2022-11-27_19-53-32.png
    • Regular LED turn signals on the high-end headlights and taillights. The sequential turn signals are not in compliance with federal regulations since the surface area of the first section that lights up is too small, so the whole section lights up as one instead.

    • Rear daytime running lights repurposed as regular taillights. While the regulations are strict regarding side marker lights and turn signals, the US currently does not require rear DRLs, so the company was able to repurpose them as taillights that only turn on when the headlights are also on.
    screenshot_2022-11-25_17-05-34.png
    • A few configurations of the Centauri with the federalized lighting. Note that they only consist of the more luxurious gas-powered trim levels, since diesels are not popular in North America and Procyon wants to market the Centauri as an upscale, off-road capable SUV in that market.

    How to Use:
The headlights and taillights are located in their respective parts selection menu slot. They are marked as US-spec, which are the permitted lights for the North American market. The reflectors are available under the Additional Modifications slot. Each of the four reflectors are independent of each other so that one can mix and match wheel arches and apply the reflectors correspondingly.

This DIY approach may be redundant, but I want everyone to be able to configure their ideal USDM Centauri as they see it fit, apart from the included configurations.

    screenshot_2022-11-19_23-18-22.png

    Known Issues:
    • The side marker lights do not break when the wheel arches are deformed enough
    • Thumbnails are slightly off compared to the latest version of the original vehicle mod (they were taken in game version 0.26, and the thumbnail generator is currently not working for me in game version 0.27)
    Credits:
    • Finn Wilkinson - for making the Centauri mod and giving me permission to make this add-on
    • Theo Wilkinson - acknowledging my idea
    Screenshot2022-12-22121543.png
    • baarry5444 - for making the USDM components found on this add-on
I don't expect everyone who downloaded the Centauri mod to download this add-on, but I'm sure there are some people out there that want a US-spec version like me. Thanks for reading, and have fun!

    Only version I use.

The fender flare signals and non-DRL taillights just add that boost of realism that scoots it over the Uncanny Valley it fell into previously with the huge grille piece.

Thanks for the feedback! It may merely be a simple add-on to the Centauri mod, but it's the small details that make a difference, and the North American market is now represented alongside the European and Japanese markets.

This mod is a great addition to the Centauri mod, with no complaints about anything so far. It adds an extra step of realism with the already fantastic mod, the Centauri. It's great to see that a feature I suggested be brought up in this mod!

I would also like to thank the creator for elaborating on my comment in the Bug reporting thread, and most importantly thank you for implementing these features in the mod.

At least the twin-turbo V6 and V8 engines are EPA emission certified (which honestly doesn't change anything on the mod)? You're probably being sarcastic to begin with, but thanks for the review xD

The lore that I came up with should be more reasonable and realistic. I'm surprised that more than a handful of people actually want USDM specifications, because this add-on has reached around 20,000 downloads. I do appreciate the feedback!

Very nice! Never heard of rear DRLs in the US but I know most newer vehicles sold in the US have front DRLs. The ones I see now use the same LEDs for the turn signals. They show white for DRL and then amber and blinking for turn signals.
    1. baarry5444
      Author's Response
Yes, rear DRLs are technically a thing in certain parts of the world like Europe. Like front DRLs, their main purpose is to prevent accidents from happening during the daytime. The original mod has them by default, though my add-on provides an alternate set of taillights without the rear DRLs (as well as regular LED turn signals).

I'm also aware of certain vehicles where the DRLs also double as turn signals. However, I will have to see if the real-world implementation as you described is possible in BeamNG; so far, only the brake lights and taillights can double as turn signals. Thanks for the review!

      Author's Response
Now that you mentioned it, I did notice that many SUV owners have a tow hitch (aka trailer hitch). I'll take a look at tow hitch regulations in the US and figure something out for a future update. Thanks for the feedback!
