NNAZ 3131 Sviyaga 1.1

Traditional reliability speaks the language of millenium's design now.

In 1990s, Russian automotive industry suffers from aging and impractical designs, quality issues and most importantly, imports.

NNAZ (Nizhny Novgorod Avtomobilny Zavod-Automobile Factory), the prominent and awarded large-scale automaker of the former Soviet Union and Russia, has just privatized in 1994. New managers has just realized that a complete revision for the entire plant was needed. While the revision of the plant was still going on, automobile development team of the NNAZ was on the work for a new generation Sviyaga (or Sviiaga) sedan, the 3131 model.

This is what a Volga blue 3131 hides under.
3131 Sviyaga features still-in-use traditional suspension and floorpan but a brand new multipoint DOHC engine.

3131 Sviyaga was intended to compete with imported executive sedans. It basically has a completely new partial aluminum monocoque bodyshell and interior on the traditional Sviyaga floorpan, drivetrain and suspension. Main reason for the choice of some archaic parts on a modern vehicle was to prevent incompatibility on spare parts nationwide. The 3131 Sviyaga was the only car in the world to have leaf springs of its class. This did not cause any headache on reliability, but comfort to be compromised.

For the first time, a newly developed 2.5 liter DOHC engine with injection and ignition in-one-board controller has used on the entire Sviyaga lineup with 3131 model. It's mated with close-ratio 5 speed transmission and 3.9 final drive to make 3131 Sviyaga's top speed to 204 km/h and acceleration 0 to 100 km/h in about 12 seconds.

Production has started in November 1999 in Ulyanovsk plant along classical Sviyaga models.

3131 Sviyaga was the first Russian made car ever to be crash-tested.

In 2000, 3131 Sviyaga was crash tested in Russian Automobile Club's newly established crash test facility. As the tests conclude, 3131 shows more rigidity among its competitors and it was still impressive even on collisions on 90 km/h. But it was also a deficit because of SRS airbag was not even in option for driver and front passenger.

The famous urban legend "Black Sviyaga" has revived again with the 3131. Some alleged ex-KGB criminals, mafia, organ thiefs and harassers were wandering around small villages with charcoal black 3131s in late 2000s and 2010s.

During its production, Sviyaga received many negative feedbacks on its old-fashioned suspension, underpowered engine, longer braking distance and inadequate passive safety. As it expected, 3131 was not sufficient to compete with high-end imports and bring NNAZ's glorified days back, and it's soldiered on to 2004 without any direct successor. As the 3131 discontinued, NNAZ has focused on diesel powered light and medium truck production.
