In September 1970, Gavril-Werke GmbH, German subsidiary of Gavril located in Aachen, has introduced a brand-spanking new gran turismo/sports coupe model called Capraia (named after a Tuscan island of Italy) for European markets.
As an Europe-oriented sports car, Capraia is developed after a high demand for a performance car like American Gavril Barstow.
In its development stage, Capraia has been tested in 250000 kms of various types of West German roads such as large Autobahns to harsh country roads by world champion rally pilots on the wheel.
A refuel break at Strecke 161, 6th June of 1971. Gavril Capraia's 2.6 liter V6 engine runs on 98 octane premium.
As a pioneer-of-its-class car in Europe, Capraia has sold at least 60 countries, United States and Canada are included too. In US-Market, Capraia has sold along Barstow as a smaller and cheaper sibling, but it wasn't so successful on the sales as Barstow until 1973 petroleum crisis has occured.
As the active and passive safety regulations became stricter, Gavril Capraia became the first European sports car comes with rear glass defroster and all-steel radials are standard.
